New Year's Resolution checkup1. Did you set resolutions for the New Year?
What were they?
How are you doing with them?
Let’s take a look at your resolutions from another perspective…

2. •
How do you feel when you contemplate your
resolutions? Do they feel kind, wholesome,
uplifting? Or, on the contrary, do you feel
tension or pressure inside as you think of
them?
•
What makes our resolutions feel wholesome,
or unpleasant?
•
Where do they stem from in your being.
•
Why are we so often unable to keep our
resolutions?
•
Well, we have an outer self made up of our
body, mind and emotions and an inner self, the
soul…

3. We are multi-dimensional beings.
•
The outer self is made up of
our body, mind and emotions.
•
Innermost Being
Our deepest drives and needs
stem from the Inner Being and
Innermost Being. These needs
are easy to identify (with
practice) because they simply
feel more wholesome,
meaningful and fulfilling.
•
Inner Being
Outer self
Pursuing our outer needs to the
exclusion of our inner needs
ultimately leads to
dissatisfaction and emptiness.

Doing
Inner self
Higher, noble or
soul needs
Outer self
• Basic needs
• subsistence,
damage
control,
compensatory
needs
•
The inner or soul needs are fulfilled by being rather than doing. We can grasp our inner needs by
listening to our inner voice. What are your inner needs?
•
Our outer/doing needs can be all-consuming if we don’t keep them in check. It’s easier and more
rewarding to address our conflicts rather than engage in avoidance and distraction. What are your
outer needs? Can you distinguish between basic needs and subsistence or compensatory needs?

5. Find a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted.
Sit upright, with a straight back, but comfortable and relaxed.
Bring your awareness to your breath.
If you bring your attention to rest on the breath, your mind will naturally slow down and enable you to
deepen your awareness. Try it for a few moments.
Don’t worry if your mind wanders, just gently bring it back to the breath.
Let the breath gently melt away any tensions or thoughts that distract you.
Now bring your awareness to each of your resolutions, one at a time.
Breathe and let yourself feel the resonance of your resolution – do you feel any emotion, any thoughts
or any visceral sensations as you contemplate that resolution? Why?
Do not judge, analyze or get caught up in them. Try to observe them from a neutral or well-meaning
place in yourself.
Keeping your focus inward, you may choose to make note of your feelings.

6. •
How can you take into
consideration and nurture
your multi-dimensional
needs in the New Year?
•
Remember, our inner
needs involve listening to
and taking care of our soul.
The outer needs address
body, mind and emotions.
They either reflect basic
needs but may also reflect
the impulse to compensate
for or mask inner discord.

What if in 2014, our
resolutions addressed
body, mind soul and spirit!?

7. • Now, place your
vision in the middle
of your mind map.
Add the qualities
and resolutions that
came to you in your
meditation.
• Be sure to use
plenty of colors and
images
• Remember to enjoy
the process!!
