The Thesis Project aims at obtaining a Master's Degree in International Relations, it´s addressed
to the phenomenon of Intelligence in Portugal. The focus of the study is to understand what types of
relationships underscore the relation between policy makers andIntelligence Officials.
The study consists in five chapters. A first due to the conceptual and methodological
framework of the Project. A second chapter devoted to the historical
evolution ofservices from the Foundation of Nationality to the demise of Salazar´s regime in 1976.
The third chapter illustrates the Reference Models from the United States and Great Britain, ending
with some comparisons with the three systems of governance.
The fourth chapter describes the architecture of the Intelligence Services in Portugal and
analyzes the legal framework. In this chapter the relationships trends are analyzed based upon the
statements of political and intelligence offcials.
In the conclusions I try to confirm my hypotheses and I phase out the exercise by drawing some
leads to the future activities of the portuguese Intelligence Services.
