The UK government is implementing a smart metering program to replace traditional gas and electricity meters with digital smart meters in homes and small businesses by 2020. Smart meters will provide near real-time information on energy use to both consumers and energy suppliers to help consumers reduce energy consumption and lower energy bills through more efficient energy management. The program aims to save consumers £17-21 billion over the lifetime of the smart meters.
