2. What kind of media institution might distribute your film and
why?
In our research and planning stages, as a group, we found out after looking at several
different psychological thrillers, that one of the most common distribution companies
were Warner Brother Pictures. Warner Brothers have distributed films such as ‘The
Orphan' in 2009 and the American psychological thriller 'Copycat'. Many more well
known films like Inception, Argo, the Shining and Usual Suspects. So from this research
we decided that Warner brothers would be the best and most suitable choice to
distribute our media film opening. The main reason for this is because both’ The
Orphan’ and ‘Copycat’ had large budgets and both of these films nearly doubled their
budget money. By having such a large budget allows films to have the best equipment,
A-listed actors and sets. This would be ideal for our film as it would give us more
opportunity to create a more realistic atmosphere for our audience. As Warner Brothers
have had previous experience in making psychological thrillers, this would give us an
advantage as they have the knowledge and skills to create a memorable and effective
film. As previous Warner Brother films have been successful, this would automaticity
give us an advantage in the film industry. By having a well known distributor it would
play an important role in whether or not our film becomes successful or not. If we didn’t
have a well know global distributor it would be hard to publicise our film opening to our
audience, and we wouldn’t make any profit.
Also by our audience knowing who our film distributor is gives us another advantage as
they automatically know that they’ve previously had successful films before which have
reached box office. This could potentially make them want to watch our film more and
they’d more than likely want to go and watch our film at the cinema.
This is another advantage of having a well known distributor or because it’s easier to
get your film into the cinemas. If we had have chosen a small independent film
distributor then our film would have probably either gone straight to DVD online. This
would have meant that we would have to viral advertise our film by using social media
websites like Twitter, MySpace and Facebook. The only means for our audience to
watch our film would be online on websites like Indiefilms.com. This would mean that
