What can we learn from reflecting on the surviving fragments of Heraclitus, the Pre-Socratic Philosopher? Many of his pithy sayings inspired the later Cynic and Stoic Philosophers, and the Church Fathers, including Clement of Alexandria and Hippolytus of Rome. These sayings by Heraclitus include: God is day and night, winter and summer, war and peace, plenty and hunger. Life and death are the same; so are waking and sleeping, youth and age. Man is called a baby by God, even as a child by man. Asses prefer straw to gold. All things are in a state of flux. Presentation prepared by Javier Ortega and Lourdes Rico and delivered by Lourdes Rico, Honorary Research Associate, the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew at the Joseph Hooker bicentenary conference 'The Making of Modern Botany' at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. 30 June 2017. ABSTRACT: A few years after J.D. Hooker returned from the Antarctic expedition, he worked and authored, in collaboration with G. Bentham, on the 'Flora Nigritiana' (1849). In the same volume, Philip Barker Webb, published the first comprehensive flora for the Cape Verde Islands: 'Spicilegia Gorgonea'. This work has many references to herbarium specimens that J.D. Hooker collected in these islands on his way to the Antarctic. Hooker’s materials were sent to the continent to be liaised by Webb with other important European botanists such as Parlatore; it is believed most of the dried specimens were returned to Kew after the completion of the 'Spicilegia Gorgonea'. During our botanical history research at Kew we have: (1) tried to locate all herbarium specimens collected by Hooker in the Cape Verde Islands, (2) examined entries pertinent to Madeira, the Canaries, and the Cape Verdes found in Hooker's travelogue for his Antarctic voyage, and (3) studied letters that J.D. Hooker exchanged with G. Bentham, P.B. Webb and others that are relevant to the Macaronesian Islands. We discuss the currently accepted names of the specimens and their historical context. In addition, the transcribed notes from his journal and letters will be discussed.

The Biodiversity Information Standards (TDWG), also known as the Taxonomic Databases Working Group, is a non-profit scientific and educational association that is affiliated with the International Union of Biological Sciences. TDWG was formed to establish international collaboration among biological database projects and related services. Promoting the wider and more effective dissemination of information about the World's heritage of biological organisms for the benefit of the world at large, TDWG focuses on the development of standards for the exchange of biological/biodiversity data. TDWG promotes the use of standards through the most appropriate and effective means and acts as a forum for discussion through holding meetings and through publications, especially the recently launched open access journal, Biodiversity Information Standards and Science. This presentation will focus on areas of possible collaboration by the larger networked information community around bioinformatic standards, areas where TDWG collaborates with other biodiversity organizations such as the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL), the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL), and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).
