Hana Hou is a popular Hawaiian word that is widely
understood by local residents of Hawaii to mean “do it
again, one more time, encore.” Given our interest in
encouraging older adults to pivot from retiring to re-wiring or
re-firing, “Hana Hou” seems to be our island’s most fitting
word to convey this message.

This directory supports our efforts to create a “silver wave” of op-
portunities for active older adults by opening doors to our state’s
mind and body wellness-centered services—from Shipwreck Ar-
chaeology and Maritime History classes at the Osher Lifelong
Learning Institute to Argentine Tango classes at the Manoa Dance
Studio, we have compiled a comprehensive and practical guide
that will help us all to maintain our physical, emotional, intellectual
and spiritual health as we transition together into a “new old age.”
We hope you will use this resource to enhance your encore experi-
ence, whether you are entering, planning for, or currently enjoying
retirement.
Hana Hou and Imua Hawaii!
A L O H A ,

Hana Hou! Making the Best of Our Encore Years,
a resource guide filled with services that will help
our kupuna, boomers and future generations of

ment, nor is exclusion a reflection on the value or quality of an
agency’s services.

yourself and others, and be open to the
learning experience as you make the best
of your encore years!

Regular exercise is important to the total health and fitness for people of all ages.
Actually, regular exercise is even more important to older adults. Exercise main-
tains fitness, stimulates brain health, helps to establish social relations, promotes
regularity, prevents premature dependence on others and generally improves
your quality of life.
A regular exercise program can build and maintain muscular strength and en-
durance while also improving the capacity of the heart, circulatory system and
lungs even in those 80 and over. It is never too late to get fit. Even after years of
inactivity, your body will respond positively to regular exercise. Your body works
better when you use it. “Use it or Lose it!”
Before starting an exercise program, have a physical examina-
tion and follow the doctor’s advice.
Always do stretching exercises to “warm up” before and “cool down”
after aerobic exercise.
Wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
Exercise daily and gradually increase the amount of exercise each day
to at least 30 minutes daily. Make it a part of your daily routine.
Remember to exercise your heart, your muscles and your balance
“Use it or lose it!”

Okinawans have a saying “Hara hachibu,” which means that it is best to just eat
until you are 80 percent full. It’s a good advice not to overeat or to stuff your-
self. Some have even suggested that two good meals a day may be all that we
really need and that is related to what we know about the value of caloric re-
striction to improve our life expectancy.
Eat foods with more fiber to aid digestion and reduce the risk of bowel cancer.
Drink lots of water. Eight (8) glasses per day are especially im-
portant if you increase your fiber intake.
Eat lots of fruits and vegetables.
Cut back on fat. Limit your use of butter, cream, margarines, etc. Broil, bake or
boil rather than fry. Use non-fat or low fat dairy products.
Eat more starch such as brown rice, potatoes, whole-grain
bread, cereals and fruits.
Choose lean meat, fish, poultry, dry beans and peas as your
protein sources.
Limit your use of eggs and organ meats (such as liver).
Limit your alcohol consumption.
Consult with your doctor regarding your ideal caloric needs.
Take a multivitamin tablet daily to be assured that you are receiving the opti-
mal level of essential vitamins and minerals.
Page 7
Cut back on sugar and foods high in sugar such as candy,
soda and other soft drinks, ice cream, cakes, cookies.
Reduce the amount of salt that you eat to prevent heart dis-
ease and high blood pressure.

People who are retiring at age 65 can expect to live 20 to 30 more years to
live on a fixed income. This is why it is most important that we take a careful
look at our finances and life goals.
Assess where your money will come from in retirement - Pensions, Social Secu-
rity, home equity, reverse mortgage, deferred compensation plans, inher-
itance, life insurance. Estimate your retirement income before retirement.
How are your investments doing for your retirement years? What are
their yields or return rates? How safe is your principal? How quickly
can you cash out your investments? Are your yields and principal
guaranteed? What is the term of the investment?
Have you done estate planning? Do you have a trust? Do you have a will? Do
you need a power of attorney?
Plan now for long-term care and how you expect to pay for it. Re-
member Medicare is designed primarily to cover acute hospital
and medical costs. Medicaid is a state and federal health insur-
ance for the poor. It is available only if your assets and income are
very low. Long-term care insurance may be an option for those
who can afford it.
Assess your home for your living needs as you age from your early
active years to your later and possibly more dependent retirement
years. Will your present home suit you in your early and late retire-
ment years? Do you expect to relocate into a retirement commu-
nity, assisted living facility or nursing home in the future to meet all
of your housing, health and social support service needs?
Consider consulting a financial planner.

One of the most exciting developments is in the area of brain health. We are
learning that the brain can keep growing and replacing brain cells. Words such
as neurogenesis and brain plasticity all point out that the brain needs exercising
just like our physical bodies. Brain exercise is different but nevertheless, just as im-
portant.
The great enemy to the healthy senior mind is depression. New activities, hob-
bies, and exercise are wonderful anti-depressants. If you are truly depressed,
do not bear it alone. Seek help.
Seek out variety, challenges and new adventures in you daily life.
Spend time with people in different age groups. Travel.
Establish and maintain warm relationships.
Learn relaxation techniques to control your stress—
Rest—Music—Laugh more!
Look toward the future positively.
Take pride in yourself.
Consider the retirement years as an opportunity to look anew at yourself and
your life, to come closer to the meaning of your life in relation to the world
around you and to grow personally and emotionally.
Page 9
Stay active doing things that use your memory. Take a
class, play games, be with people, develop a craft hob-
by, learn a language.
Find your passion and devote your time as
a volunteer or for a paycheck. Get in-
volved with a cause that you believe in.

The only time you should be giving out your
credit card, bank account or social security
number is if you initiated the call and you know
the company with which you are dealing.

Seniors are often targets of scams or high pressure sales tactics. Beware of
scams.
Don’t be pressured to make a decision now to get a “big”
discount. Don’t let anyone rush you into a decision.
If the offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is a scam!
Be suspicious if the salesperson insists on receiving your
money right away and/or in cash. A legitimate business will
wait to receive your money.
Beware of winning prizes, jackpots or
sweepstakes. If you win a prize, you
should not have to pay or incur any
expense to receive it.

We can strive to remain fit – physically, mentally, financially, nutritionally – but to
what end? We will have 20-30 bonus years and maybe even more but what do
we do with our added life expectancy? Plan to find your purpose or passion
and that will provide the reason to remain fit.
Conduct a life review and find your passion. To
achieve a state of vitality requires engagement
in voluntary activities, work, education or care-
giving.
Do you have life skills, professional expertise or
talent that be used for your encore career, your
2nd Act?
If you are seeking employment, can you find
work that uses your talents and skills in work that
may be consistent with your interest in larger so-
cial causes – homelessness, childcare, research,
environment, health care, immigrants, recy-
cling, etc.

whose family may be challenged in maintaining a consistently caring and nurturing
environment. Examples of this service include grief counseling to cope with the death of
a parent, and support to family caregivers who are providing a home for children unable
to live with their parents.
Group Services offer help to children and those influential in their lives such as parents
and grandparents to support and educate them in areas of interest or concern. Groups
are formed around a variety of topics that benefit children, including: parenting grief/
loss issues, support to grandparents raising grandchildren, leadership development, and
Hawaiian cultural values and practices.

Driver Safety Event: Make an appointment for a 20 minute CarFit
"Check Up" with a trained volunteer or Occupational Therapist.
You'll find out how to make adjustments to your vehicle to
maximize your safety and comfort on the road. Its purpose is to help older drivers
find out how well their vehicles “fit” them, demonstrate ways to improve comfort and
safety, and promote conversations about driver safety and community mobility.
Older drivers are more likely to wear their seat belts and less likely to drink and
drive, but they are more likely to be seriously injured or killed in car crashes. Drivers
can improve their safety by ensuring that their cars are properly adjusted for them.

Encore Dance Project (EDP) was created to provide
opportunities for individuals to perform who may not
currently have that available to them due to age. A unique
aspect of TMC’s mission is to include individuals with a
range of abilities and disabilities.
Due to the physical wear and tear on the body, age
traditionally is a limiting factor in dance. The Movement Center does not believe this is
true. EDP helps address the needs of older performing artists and gives them a chance to
learn, create and perform in new, original dances. It also provides the community of
Honolulu with the opportunity to witness and support mature adults participating in the
performing arts.
Eligibility: Membership to EDP is by audition only. For more details about EDP please
contact the Artistic Director, Chansri A Green.

Actually, regular exercise is even more important to older adults. Exercise main- tains fitness, stimulates brain health, helps to establish social relations, promotes regularity, prevents premature dependence on others and generally improves your quality of life. A regular exercise program can build and maintain muscular strength and en- durance while also improving the capacity of the heart, circulatory system and lungs even in those 80 and over. It is never too late to get fit. Even after years of inactivity, your body will respond positively to regular exercise. It’s a good advice not to overeat or to stuff your- self. Some have even suggested that two good meals a day may be all that we really need and that is related to what we know about the value of caloric re- striction to improve our life expectancy. Eat foods with more fiber to aid digestion and reduce the risk of bowel cancer. Drink lots of water. Eight (8) glasses per day are especially im- portant if you increase your fiber intake. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Cut back on fat. Limit your use of butter, cream, margarines, etc. Broil, bake or boil rather than fry. Use non-fat or low fat dairy products. Eat more starch such as brown rice, potatoes, whole-grain bread, cereals and fruits. Choose lean meat, fish, poultry, dry beans and peas as your protein sources. Limit your use of eggs and organ meats (such as liver). Limit your alcohol consumption. Consult with your doctor regarding your ideal caloric needs. Take a multivitamin tablet daily to be assured that you are receiving the opti- mal level of essential vitamins and minerals. Page 7 Cut back on sugar and foods high in sugar such as candy, soda and other soft drinks, ice cream, cakes, cookies. Reduce the amount of salt that you eat to prevent heart dis- ease and high blood pressure. “You are what you eat, so eat colorfully!” NUTRITIONAL FITNESS Page 8 Address: Text Website: Text Fees: Text. This is why it is most important that we take a careful look at our finances and life goals. Assess where your money will come from in retirement - Pensions, Social Secu- rity, home equity, reverse mortgage, deferred compensation plans, inher- itance, life insurance. Estimate your retirement income before retirement. How are your investments doing for your retirement years? What are their yields or return rates? How safe is your principal? How quickly can you cash out your investments? Are your yields and principal guaranteed? What is the term of the investment? Have you done estate planning? Do you have a trust? Do you have a will? Do you need a power of attorney? Plan now for long-term care and how you expect to pay for it. Re- member Medicare is designed primarily to cover acute hospital and medical costs. Medicaid is a state and federal health insur- ance for the poor. It is available only if your assets and income are very low. Long-term care insurance may be an option for those who can afford it. Assess your home for your living needs as you age from your early active years to your later and possibly more dependent retirement years. Will your present home suit you in your early and late retire- ment years? Do you expect to relocate into a retirement commu- nity, assisted living facility or nursing home in the future to meet all of your housing, health and social support service needs? Consider consulting a financial planner. “Save enough for 30 golden years” FINANCIAL FITNESS

The only time you should be giving out your credit card, bank account or social security number is if you initiated the call and you know the company with which you are dealing. Page 11 Seniors are often targets of scams or high pressure sales tactics. Beware of scams. Don’t be pressured to make a decision now to get a “big” discount. Don’t let anyone rush you into a decision. If the offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is a scam! Be suspicious if the salesperson insists on receiving your money right away and/or in cash. You'll find out how to make adjustments to your vehicle to maximize your safety and comfort on the road. Its purpose is to help older drivers find out how well their vehicles “fit” them, demonstrate ways to improve comfort and safety, and promote conversations about driver safety and community mobility. Older drivers are more likely to wear their seat belts and less likely to drink and drive, but they are more likely to be seriously injured or killed in car crashes. Drivers can improve their safety by ensuring that their cars are properly adjusted for them. A unique aspect of TMC’s mission is to include individuals with a range of abilities and disabilities. Due to the physical wear and tear on the body, age traditionally is a limiting factor in dance. The Movement Center does not believe this is true. EDP helps address the needs of older performing artists and gives them a chance to learn, create and perform in new, original dances. It also provides the community of Honolulu with the opportunity to witness and support mature adults participating in the performing arts. Eligibility: Membership to EDP is by audition only. For more details about EDP please contact the Artistic Director, Chansri A Green. Thursday, 7:30-9:30pm
