This study contributed to literature suggesting that heterosexual and LGB relationships function similarly, and several attachment theoretical findings based on heterosexual samples profited from an empirical cross-validation with a mixed-orientation sample. "Research on gay male, lesbian, and bisexual (LGB) attachment relationships may provide empirical contributions to the generalizability of differential attachment, and to our understanding of how gender affects close relationships." (Peplau & Fingerhut, 2007) The emotional, physiological, and behavioral functions of the romantic attachment system do not vary based on the gender composition of the dyad.

There are a plethora of data indicating that intimate partner violence (IPV) occurs at high rates in college students (Shorey, Cornelius, & Bell, 2008). Although studies have repeatedly demonstrated these high rates of IPV, some researchers have criticized the reliability and validity of the self-report measures commonly used to assess these rates (Follingstad & Ryan, 2013; Ryan, 2013). There is some research to suggest that subtle factors, such as item order, can impact self-reports of violence victimization and perpetration (Ramirez & Straus, 2006). This phenomenon has been most widely studied in the context of the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS2; Straus, et al., 1996), a widely used measure of IPV, which may not comprehensively assess psychological aggression. Thus, in the current study we examined differences in self-reports of psychological aggression victimization and perpetration using the Multidimensional Measure of Emotional Abuse (MMEA; Murphy & Hoover, 1999) when it was administered in either the standard format or in a format in which question order was randomized. Given that there may be gender differences in victimization and perpetration, we also examined the impact gender would have on item order effects. Presented at ABCT, Nov. 2015.

ABSTRACT: Dyadic coping conceives coping as a response in which partners support each other and cope with stress as a couple rather than individuals, but little is known of the factors that lead to dyadic coping. The present study aims to explore the relationship between dyadic coping and adult attachment. That is, to examine whether an individual’s attachment style is a predictor of their own dyadic coping style and their partner’s dyadic coping style. Online, survey data was collected from 74 childless couples, between the ages of 18 and 31, who had been in their relationships for over 6 months. Overall, analysis showed stronger associations between dyadic coping and attachment for females, with minimal associations for males. The results of the present study are supportive of the existing literature, though provide opportunities for further research. KEYWORDS: dyadic coping, coping, attachment, romantic relationships, APIM

Adolescent Internalizing Symptoms and the “Tightknittedness” of Friendship Groups Sonja E. Siennick and Mayra Picon Florida State University Adolescents with depression have lower peer status overall, but tend to befriend each other. We examined the “tightknittedness” of their friendship groups by testing whether adolescent friendship groups’ average levels of or vari- ability in internalizing symptoms predict group cohesiveness. We used four waves (9th–12th grades) of survey and social network data on 3,013 friendship groups from the PROmoting School-Community-University Partnerships to Enhance Resilience study. Friendship groups with higher average depressive symptoms were less cohesive; groups with higher average anxiety symptoms had greater reciprocity. Groups with greater variability in depressive symptoms had greater density; variability in anxiety symptoms was not consistently associated with cohesion. The friendship groups of depressed adolescents appear less cohesive than the “typical” adolescent friendship group. When compared with their peers, adolescents with more depressive symptoms have fewer friends, have less stable friendships, and are more often victimized and rejected by their peers (Chan & Poulin, 2009; Kochel, Ladd, & Rudolph, 2012; Rose et al., 2011; Stice, Ragan, & Randall, 2004). Yet depressive symptoms also are a basis for friend- ship formation, such that adolescents experiencing these symptoms tend to be friends with each other (Cheadle & Goosby, 2012; Hogue & Steinberg, 1995; Schaefer, Kornienko, & Fox, 2011). This means that even if they have lower status in their larger peer networks, many adolescents with depressive symptoms do have friends, and those friends often have depressive symptoms them- selves. Thus many youth with depressive symp- toms are likely embedded in friendship groups of adolescents with similar symptoms. Yet we do not know whether these friendship groups are as cohe- sive as the groups formed by youth without depressive symptoms, or whether they are structurally weaker and thus not comparable sub- stitutes, at least in terms of cohesion, for typical friendship groups. Most studies of depressive symptoms and peer networks have focused on dyadic interactions or on individual adolescents’ status within entire social networks, rather than on friendship groups. This study examined whether friendship groups comprised of adolescents with more depressive symptoms are smaller and “looser,” or less tight- knit, than groups characterized by fewer depres- sive symptoms. It also examined whether groups whose members vary more in their levels of depressive symptoms are smaller and less tight- knit. Finally, it distinguished between symptoms of depression and symptoms of anxiety, which stud- ies suggest may have opposite effects on friendship cohesion (Rose et al., 2011). To our knowledge, this is the first paper to describe the internal cohesive- ness of friendship groups with members who have varying.

Assessing Gender Role of Partner-Violent Men Using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2): Comparing Abuser Types David M. Lawson Stephen F. Austin State University Dan F. Brossart Texas A&M University Lee W. Shefferman University of Northern Colorado This study investigated traditional masculine gender role differences between male partner abuser types using the Masculinity/Femininity subsection scales of Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) Structural Summary. We examined differences between four groups of partner-violent men (borderline, antisocial, psychotic features, and nonpathological partner violent) and one group of nonpartner-violent men on five MMPI-2 subscales: Masculinity-Femininity, Gender Role-Feminine, Gender Role-Masculine, Ego Inflation, and Low Self-esteem. Results indicated that the borderline group reported the most consistent traditional feminine gender role orientation of all the groups, whereas the antisocial group reported the most consistent traditional masculine gender role orientation of all the groups. The psychotic features group reported characteristics associated with both traditional masculinity and traditional feminine gender role making it distinct among all the groups. The nonpathological intimately violent group and the nonpartner-violent group reported no extreme scores when compared with the other three groups. The borderline and antisocial groups reported significantly more exposure to family of origin violence and use of more severe forms of partner abuse than the other three partner abuse groups. Treatment implications are addressed. Keywords: masculinity, gender role, partner violence, domestic violence Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pattern of abusive behavior (physical and psychological) in a significant relationship and is often used by one partner to gain or maintain power/control over another partner (Office of Violence Against Women, 2009). Fam- ily conflict research indicates approximately equal rates of IPV for men and women (12% each) in national community samples (Stets & Straus, 1990; Straus, 1999). Crime studies, such as the National Violence Against Women in America Survey (NVAW; Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000), indicate a much higher rate of assaults by men (i.e., 61%), but at a much smaller prevalence rates. Regardless of the type of survey, evidence indicates that women often experience more severe injuries and longer lasting symptoms, such as post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety (Cas- cardi, Langhinirichsen, & Vivian, 1992; Stets & Straus, 1990). Some scholars account for this phenomena by asserting that men have a greater tendency to use IPV to control and coerce women based on traditional masculine gender role and societal norms (Cascardi et al., 1992; Dobash & Dobash, 1998). This study investigated gender role differences between types of male partner abusers using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventor.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
