Starter
Times table bingo
Objectives
Identify three types of physical disability
Define the term ‘ physical disability’

How do we define ‘physical disability’ ?
Physical disability
A physical disability is when an individual finds mobility
challenging, or they may to use assistance to get around.
They may need a carer to support them to get around and
move from place to place. They may have fine motor or
gross motor challenges.
Hand Bandages
All day you will have your hand bandaged to experience what it
could be like to have a physical challenge.
Take this seriously………really think about how difficult some
day to day tasks can become.
You will be reflecting on this in you next session with me.
GET BANDANGED BY YOUR FRIEND NOW!!!!!
2.1
What causes a Physical Disability?
Congenital disability
Progressive disability
Acquired disability
In pairs write down what you think each of these terms might
mean.
2.1
What causes a Physical Disability?
Congenital disability – This means that the physical disability
was present at birth. This could also be a genetic syndrome.
Progressive disability – This is a disability that gets diagnosed
and you may deteriorate over a period of time. For example
- muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis
Acquired disability – This is a disability that is sudden – for
example, paralysis because of an RTA or a soldier injured in
battle.
2.1
In groups of 3 research The
following disabilities.
Spina Bifida
Muscular Dystrophy
Parkinsons Disease
Charge Syndrome 20mins
You will be presenting your findings to the class
5 minute presentations per group
Reflect
What type of physical disability does
Dave have?
Congenital disability?
Progressive disability?
Acquired disability?
Other examples of physical
disabilities
Arthritis
Amputation
Brain injury
Spinal injury
Cerebral Palsy
Are these congenital, progressive or acquired?
Poster
Create a poster that identifies the types of
physical disabilities and challenges an
individual could have.
You will use these posters to complete
your assignment task 2.1
