- Our presentation is about Wayfinding through Library Signage. Dos Libros visited Indian Trails Public Library in Wheeling, Illinois.
- So you’re driving down the road. How do you find the library? I don’t go to Wheeling very often. Then, I saw a sign. There’s the library.Cute pictogram, but could be improved with text.
- Once we are in the library parking lot, where can we drive?
- What do we see as we enter the library? Hours of Operation on the glass door. Donor bricks on the exterior of the building.Let’s go inside.
- Community and Library Bulletins are posted on this board. Self-checkout with 5 terminals providing instruction in several languages. Pay your library fines, return materials, or check out library materials here. Sign, indicating where a line should form, and the direction individuals will walk from the line to a terminal. Sign above Checkout terminal provides users with incentives. “You could be a winner!” If many users are using these self-checkout terminals, perhaps the library could program a survey question at the end of each transaction. Potential cool tool for collecting useful statistics.
- Some examples of Indian Trails public library’s patron awareness. Convenience baskets. Television providing patrons with interesting, useful community and library information.
- Back of the first level of the library. Unique signage, warning signs (do not touch the hot vents), pictograms to match sections with signs. Many book face-outs inspired by the bookstore model.
- Young Adult section, close to children’s section – for gradual young reader development. Books clearly labeled with corresponding pictograms. Teen Zone near Children’s and Young Adults. Computers near this section with signs restricting/reserving usage.
- Reference desk labeled “Ask Here!” Makes reference librarians seem more approachable to library patrons. Signs all over the library tell library patrons not to be shy about asking for help.
- Library Mission. Posted prominently on the 2nd floor, near the main stair case. ITPLD does not censor/restrict the checkout of materials – as part of its mission. Libraries wish to provide “a world of knowledge under one roof!”
- Rules and RegulationsColor impactIndian Trails maintains a “High School Area Blog” through their Website. This blog is used by both students and teachers in the community. Book reviews/reports are posted and students gain experience navigating/posting onto a Website.
- Directory near the elevators, Reader’s advisory wall, Multimedia signage, and Donor signage.Braille signage,Restrooms,Emergency exits,Meeting rooms,Periodicals.
- Giving Spanish speakers options to search the catalog, or ask for assistance!
- Director Thomas Simiele hope to remedy this problem ASAP
