Hi , my name is Elke and this is my grandfather Marcel
He passed away 2 months ago at the glorious age of 89
Friends that are close to me tell me I am a lot like him
He thought me 3 life lessons that I ha :
work hard
never give up
be nice to people
He was an ADHD before the word was even invented
And the greatest grandpa a women could wish for
I dedicate this talk to him
He would have loved the folllowing quote
English talk
But start with my favorite Dutch word
Just like my grandpa, this is what I stand for
What I heard when I started as entrepreneur
I want to focus my talk on stepping out of your comfortzone
When you are just doing fine, things are ging great, clients come rolling in…
Things can get really boring
And that’s when I need change
Just a few words on how it started
What I told them, and now tell people wo are hesistant to take the step
I was born 41 years ago in a little town
My mum was a great motivator
Very open minded women
Open to everyone and anything
Took me to museums and watched science shows on tv with us
Lessons I learned from her:
1/ You can do anything you want
2/ Your opinion is worth just as much as anyone elses
3/ The world is your village
4/ Whatever happens, make sure you earn your own living as a woman
Rode lap op stier
After highshool, they told me I had only 10 % chance to succeed at university
So I was doing just fine
Or even much better than fine
I learned a great deal, met very interesting people on a very high level
But I just wanted to do my own thing.
So I started a PR company
Had fun for 10 years
And then got tired of it
Again, reactions came from all kinds of people
Are you crazy? Why stop when doing so great?
So i decided to launch a matchmaking agency with Cato Leonard, a long time friend
Explain what Glassroots is all about
To be honest, it’s a lot harder than anything I did before.
But also, a lot more fun.
In my first company all I had to do was convince PR managers we were better than others. Someone was in charge, and someone had a budget. The challenge was to get that.
Today at Glassroots, I only met one company that had a stakeholder engagement manager.
And budget always needs to be find.
The benefit?
Those clients that go for it, such as VRT, Fortis, Muntpunt, Pfizer and Microsoft are caanegmakers
Finding the client
That’s our challenge
I talking to companies during our first year, everyone said ‘Who does stakeholder engagement? And what benefits or value does it bring to my company?’
A real problem, for sure.
But problems are just solutions waiting to happen.
We needed best practices, so decided to write a book about it.
A new adventure all together I must say.
We asked 50 CEO’s for an interview; everyone said yes.
We gathered more than 50 examples.
And we wrote the book. After a month, it is in the top 3 of Lannoo Campus.
Our goal for year 1 at Glassroots was to realize some reference cases.
And we did, we realized projects for VRT, Pfizer, Muntpunt, BNP Paribas Fortis, Open VLD and just started for the European Innovation Center of DHL in Bonn.
Learnings:
Do NOT listen to all people
Only to those that care about you
Are not jealeous of your success
Not everyone has to like you
Especially for the ladies: just find what you are good at, believe in yourself and go for it !
And again: not everyone has to like you
Failure is lonely
Succes is not
Remember the people that were there when the going got though
You will always need to people that believe in you but also dare to criticize you, in your personal life
And you need first clients that take a chance, trust you will do a good job
In my first company that was Microsoft, now at Glassroots it was VRT
What also worked for me, was a soulmate, someone to pingpong ideas with
That was Carine in my first company, and Cato in my second
Karen asked me to tell my personal story
I started with my mum
I will end with my daughter, now 8 years old
She is the youngest of our 5 and the only girl.
As her mum, she has one character trait that I see in all entrepreneurs that I know
IMPATIENCE AND STUBORNESS
A lot of entrepreneurs are driven by the feeling that things just move to slow
You all know the saying ‘the ones that think they are crazy enough to change the world are usually the ones that do’
Apparently these were also characteristics of Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook that recetnly wrote the book Lean In
She talks about the need for women to move beyond their own internal barriers, to go for taht promototion, start that compnay, just do it !
With my network straffe madammen, that’s exactly what we try to do – help eachother
Girls, what are you waiting for ?
