- GotoMeeting is an online application that allows you to converse with other people in a synchronous environment.
- GotoMeeting is fairly simple to download, install and use.
- After initially requiring a credit card to download the “free trial” I opted out of downloading the trial at all. The next day I received a link in the mail that allowed me to download the trial without a credit card.
- Simply go to the site < http://www.gotomeeting.com >, download the meeting tool and try it out for yourself! It only takes a few minutes to download and install.
- Wondering what you can do with an online meeting tool like GotoMeeting? Patti Shank (2008) had a wonderful list of ideas for encouraging interaction like offering karma points for those people who interact in a group discussion on whiteboard, or they could complete a word search (vocabulary related to the topic) together on whiteboard. Let your imagination step outside the box and consider your options!
- There is an interactive whiteboard that you can share with your group that allows you to annotate, draw, and erase as you go. This is a great tool for gathering opinions and doing quick checks with your learners to see whether they have questions or understand the information they have already received.
- Polling can be done through the whiteboard features. A presenter would do well to have the material gathered and ready to go prior to the actual class, that way when the time comes to see how the learner’s are progressing it will be easier to accomplish.
- In addition to an instant message type of texting, audio and visual capabilities are present in GotoMeeting’s tool. This means that you can converse directly with your learners through your computer microphone or the telephone and/or the web cam, though Clark & Kwinn (2007) would warn against attempting to have several webcams active at the same time on your monitor and effectively interacting with all of them at once, it’s not only hard on the hardware, it’s hard on the viewer as well.
- In a survey done by Wainhouse Research 158 people were talked to about their Web conferencing services, according to the information found at the Citrix website most of the information indicates a steady player in the Web conferencing field.
- Some of the benefits of a tool like GotoMeeting is that the people gathering do not have to be in the same place for the meeting. This saves on travel time and money, and allows a more diverse set of people to interact. The type of interaction becomes more full-bodied with the option to interact in many ways with various multimedia inclusions, or by sharing a screen with the presenter.
- Sometimes even the best of programs fall short if the equipment used to facilitate the meeting fails. The slowest person in the group sets the pace for the rest, if they have a slow connection speed, your speed will slow as well as the rest of the group. Video can be choppy or cause a system to freeze up during viewing, which can be problematic if it is part of the session.
- GotoMeeting’s prices are as follows: $49.00 a month or $468.00 a year for 15 attendees. This does not include “Audience Management”, “Large group events” or “Interactive training”. $99.00 a month or $948.00 a year (starting price) for up to 1000 attendees and the “Audience Management” “Large group events” or “Interactive training” components are included (GotoMeeting Compare Our Products).
