Human is a type of social animal. People living together in a more or less ordered
community. Everyone also will have their own social circle. In a society, there are
numerous type of relationships between individuals. For examples, parents and children,
friends, or elders and young people. We can not avoid forming a community in our life. As
an architecture course students, there are many type of projects and assignments that I
need to work in group. Besides, everyone in group also needed to give cooperation to
complete the projects and assignment together.
In 1898, Norman Triplett had said that races make cyclists to compete with others
and these cause them perform better during competition than during solo rides. We will
compete with someone sometime and all these competition will make us struggle for
existence. We will be inspire during competition. Our potential also will be stimulate. In my
opinion, my performance will become better than usually performance when I have a
competitor when doing something. I will have a feeling that I can not lose. Then, I will work
harder when doing work. During my culture and civilisation project, we were going to make
a performance, every students were required to form a group with eight to ten members.
Each group was given a tittle. Our group tittle was China. Amount of our group members
was less than other group. We only got eight members but the other group got minimum
nine members in their group. Besides, our group also considered as a weaker group
compared to the others so some of them looked down us.
Because of this, we tried to work hard to make sure we could make a good
performance. We increased our frequency of meeting to one week at least two times.This
was to ensure that we could practiced more and familiar with what we should do in our
acting. Besides, our group also set a target which we wanted to get at least an A on the
performance day. Therefore, although we had strong competitors but we also put our full
efforts to reach our goal. Finally, even though we had some mistakes during our
performance day but our efforts were not wasted. We produced a good performance. We
satisfied with our good performance that day and others also said that our group did a

3. good job. Therefore, it proved that humans’ potential or their hidden abilities will be
stimulated when they are in the presence of others like competitors.
In another situation, I also realised that some of our group members made less
efforts in this culture and civilisation project. Max Ringlelmann concluded that individual
will has a worse performance in the presence of others. When we had a practice or
meeting, some of the people were not given cooperation. They may came late or absent
for the practice and meeting. These caused us could not completed the tasks that we
decide to do that day. After we divided our own tasks in our meeting, most of the members
were completed their tasks in time and fulfilled the requirements. However, some of the
lazier group members were not put efforts on doing things. In their cognition, they may
thought that they can make less effort but can also achieve the goal. The reason was they
believed that others would do their tasks because others also wanted to achieve the goal.
Therefore, they will make less efforts in group than they needed to complete something on
their own. In addition, it was also not fair to other members who put more efforts.
In a nutshell, there are many types of relationships in our society. Moreover, there
are also numerous type of people surrounding us. We may contact with some of them in
our daily life and make a small community with them. Society facilities and society loafing
are two different type social psychology theories. Social facilitation occurred when people
are going to make a better performance in competition because their efforts will be identify.
Furthermore, the social loafing occurred when ones did their tasks but their individual’s
efforts cannot be identified. Therefore, some of the people will not put too much efforts on
doing thing when the individual efforts can not be identify.
