Lesser Prairie Chicken Executive Summary
In the beginning I had a very difficult time trying to get a Great Plains Bird Project
started. I spent several weeks calling and emailing several different Audubon Chapters and other
bird sanctuary’s located in the Great Plains. I was originally trying to find an ongoing project
that I could help work on, but no one contacted me back, except to say to contact my local
Audubon Chapter.
For my final project, I made a Facebook page to help bring awareness to the Lesser
Prairie Chicken’s habitat.
The Lesser Prairie Chicken is a brown, ground nesting bird, only weighing 1 to 2
pounds.
Lesser Prairie Chickens have a distinguished look between females and males.
The males have a black tuft of feathers, a yellow comb above the eyes and
red air sacs on the neck that are very prominent during the breeding season.
They eat insects, seeds, leaves, buds, and sometimes cultivated crops.
They currently only reside in 5 of the 12 states of The Great Plains.
2. The Lesser Prairie Chicken Facebook Page,
Currently has 56 likes, but is increasing daily.
Has 5 posts, including videos and pictures.
The Facebook Page has a summary that includes habitat information, and potential
effects on the environment.
There are also links, to other informative sites about the Lesser Prairie Chicken.
