I am the coordinator responsible for maintaining the global education website which is funded by AusAID to support its Global Education Program.

Global Perspectives: A framework for global education in Australian Schools provides teachers at all levels of schooling with a concise, practical and philosophical guide to the aims and learning emphases of global education. It includes useful examples of integrating global perspectives within and across learning areas and advice for teachers and school leadership teams about how to implement the framework at a school level.
According to this framework
Twenty-first century Australians are members of a global community, connected to the whole world by ties of culture, economics and politics, enhanced communication and travel and a shared environment.
Enabling young people to participate in shaping a better shared future for the world is at the heart of global education. It emphasises the unity and interdependence of human society, developing a sense of self and appreciation of cultural diversity, affirmation of social justice and human rights, building peace and actions for a sustainable future in different times and places. It places particular emphasis on developing relationships with our neighbours in the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean regions.
Global education promotes open-mindedness leading to new thinking about the world and a predisposition to take action for change. Students learn to take responsibility for their actions, respect and value diversity and see themselves as global citizens who can contribute to a more peaceful, just and sustainable world.
With its emphasis not only on developing knowledge and skills but also on promoting positive values and participation, global education is relevant across all learning areas.
How has the www changed in recent years to make it more of a place where students can participate in online learning communities?
Explain web 1.0
Web 1.0 is best described as web authors creating content for a wide audience of passive readers. Users of the internet went to websites to find out information and sometimes download content. It was very much one way communication. Any two way communication was pretty much restricted to email and chat rooms or instant messaging. Users were able to communicate with each other in this way but not really contribute to the content of the web in any way.
Web 2.0 means that anyone can publish or produce content. We can all be creators of material and information on the web as easily as we were once “downloaders” or “find outers”. Of course we will still use the internet to download content and find out information but the most significant change to note is “Who is the creator of what we are downloading and or using?” User generated content means that our information is coming from other users of the internet just like ourselves. Hence, online learning communities are created.
The Global projects online I am going to show you today are created in a virtual learning environment called Moodle. They are part of the OzProjects website and closely linked to the global education website.
Within these projects there are spaces where students can add information, collaborate and communicate online. These spaces are learning communities.
Explain wiki challenge from Potatoes project.
Explain forum discussion.
Explain how this activity worked. Students had to read about collecting water in Niger after locating Niger on a world map. They then had to add a new word to the glossary.
Learning communities can also include special guests and experts.
Another special guest
Database activity in Sanitation and Disease project
Choice activity in Potatoes project
Feedback activity from Turtle Dreaming
These projects promote student voice and empower students by giving them opportunities to express themselves, share ideas with others and ask questions of those with experience in the field of study. They become creators of knowledge in a shared online environment.
These online projects also provide links to quality global education resources. Many of the resources are suitable for use on an interactive whiteboard. As the project creator I find the resources and create learning activities based on them. Before being used in an online project resources are checked against certain criteria and to make sure they are educationally sound.
There is also a global project is one which focuses on the Millennium Development Goals.
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are eight goals to be achieved by 2015 that respond to the world's main development challenges. The MDGs are drawn from the actions and targets contained in the Millennium Declaration that was adopted by 189 nations-and signed by 147 heads of state and governments during the UN Millennium Summit in September 2000.
This project aims to assist in developing local and global citizenship by providing opportunities for students to participate in an online learning community with a focus on the Millennium Development Goals.
It includes links to quality resources
The project also has opportunities for students to discuss their learning and interactive quizzes suitable for use on iwbs.
The students are also encouraged to find a way to take action and to share their past actions or plans for future actions in a discussion forum.
Participation in global projects is supported by the OzProjects teams at Education Services Australia.
The Support projects section of the OzProjects website includes a project which aims to provide teachers with ideas for using online tools to enhance student learning.
The sample activities are based on the recently published resource Pacific Neighbours: Understanding the Pacific islands
This project aims to provide teachers with ideas for using online tools to enhance student learning about the Pacific.
Ideas include
Using maps and images as thought provoking discussion starters
Exploring options for students and teachers making quizzes to reinforce and test knowledge
Presenting research as a description by writing a digital postcard
Using animations and interactive resources to increase student understanding of global issues
Creating graphs online
Presenting information online as timelines and mind maps
