CARL / ABRC Research Project on Social Media

‘An environmental scan’ of social media usage in CARL/ABRC libraries 2011
Dean Giustini (UBC reference librarian & SLAIS adjunct faculty)

Background

The purpose of this 2011 environmental scan is to provide an overview of social media usage at

twenty-nine (29) CARL / ABRC libraries’ websites. This scan was initially undertaken prior to the

creation of a Phase I survey of Canadian academic librarians’ use of social media. The social media

tools ‘on view’ at Canadian academic library websites were determined by doing a simple inventory

at each CARL / ABRC library website. The investigators created a list (see appendix I, page 5) of

Canadian academic libraries’ use of social media and sent it for feedback to social media contacts in

each of the CARL / ABRC libraries. All suggestions for improvement were included in appendix I.

Not surprisingly, there is considerable heterogeneity in the use of social media in CARL / ABRC

libraries. As of 2011, the most commonly-used tools are blogs (individual and group blogs);

Facebook and Twitter (social networking); delicious and Zotero (social bookmarking and citation

management); collaborative writing tools such as wikis and GoogleDocs; and, the multimedia-

sharing sites YouTube and SlideShare. Undoubtedly, there are CARL / ABRC academic librarians

across the country experimenting with and using other tools (i.e. such as Gowalla and Foursquare) in

innovative ways and we seek to document these approaches more fully in phase II of our study.

Methods

In 2010 and 2011, the researchers examined the main websites of twenty-nine (29) Canadian

academic libraries (CARL/ABRC-members) as well as browsed their underlying directories and

Giustini – May 2011 Environmental scan’ of social media usage in CARL/ABRC libraries 1
branch webpages. As evidence of social media usage was encountered, the library’s use of the tool

was documented. All upper level pages at these Canadian library websites and pages below were

examined and examples of social media usage were inventoried. The challenge was to ensure a

complete examination of the websites using different main library and branch page addresses.

However, the researchers used other search methods to ensure completeness of the environmental

scan including identifying the tools most prominently-displayed on home library pages and advanced

Google searching by library domain name. The resulting document captures an overview of the

major social media usage at CARL/ABRC’s twenty-nine libraries in mid-2011.

Observations

Social media usage in CARL/ABRC libraries in 2011 varies considerably from institution to

institution, and from region to region. Institutional and regional variations are obvious by comparing

larger CARL / ABRC member libraries (e.g., UBC, UofT, UofA) and smaller institutional members

(e.g., Brock, Dalhousie, Carleton). Judging from the evidence on library websites, there is widespread

interest in the use of social media at CARL / ABRC libraries: blogs, instant messaging tools and

social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are used with some frequency and some

libraries announce their participation in social media prominently. However, with so little homogeneity

in adopting social media in CARL / ABRC libraries and no obvious library leading the cause, one

has to look for clues about best practices. This can be done by looking at the academic writing of

the librarians at CARL / ABRC member libraries and by having conversations with the librarians at

those institutions. These conversations comprise a major component of our work in phase II of this

study.

Giustini – May 2011 Environmental scan’ of social media usage in CARL/ABRC libraries 2
The difficulty in listing Canadian academic libraries’ usage of social media with some accuracy is

compounded by the sheer range of activities behind the scenes at these libraries. There is some

indication that social media staff training programs are gaining some traction in the larger libraries

(UofA, UBC, UofT) and some librarians have started to debate the impact of tools such as

Facebook and Twitter in the academy (not to mention new technologies such as smart phones,

iPhones and mobile devices). In phase II of our study, we aim to uncover why several CARL /

ABRC libraries have abandoned some of their initial projects (such as blogs) either for extended

periods of time or completely. We hope to extract additional information in phase II of our study

about academic librarians’ successes and failures in using social media in their professional activities.

Statistics arising from our inventory of CARL/ABRC websites:

    • All CARL/ABRC libraries (29) use RSS feeds in one way or another and a majority use
        blogging tools (27/29), forms of chat (25/29), Facebook (24/29) and/or Twitter (21/29).
We believe academic librarians also use these tools personally in their work but we await for
some more accurate numbers and data in phase II.

    • The use of photo-sharing and social bookmarking tools is less common in Canadian
academic libraries than the researchers believed or that the numbers would indicate.
Individual librarians use these tools but not necessarily for professional reasons. Phase II of
our survey aims to obtain further information about the use of tools outside the mainstream.

    • Regarding francophone universities (UQAM, UdeM, Sherbrooke, Laval): some tools in this
scan are English-only and it may be true that French-speaking universities are using
additional “French language” tools (“media sociaux” or “outils sociaux”).

Giustini – May 2011 Environmental scan’ of social media usage in CARL/ABRC libraries 3
• Five (5) of 29 CARL/ABRC libraries (Calgary, McGill, McMaster, Toronto, York) have
hired professional librarians with the responsibilities of an emerging technology librarian (or
similar position such as McMaster's User Experience Librarian). At least three (3) libraries have
teams of academic librarians who look at the adoption of social media (UofA, UBC,
Waterloo) or provide workshops and leadership in their respective libraries.

CARL ABRC social media environmental scan 2011

  • 1. CARL / ABRC Research Project on Social Media ‘An environmental scan’ of social media usage in CARL/ABRC libraries 2011 Dean Giustini (UBC reference librarian & SLAIS adjunct faculty) Background The purpose of this 2011 environmental scan is to provide an overview of social media usage at twenty-nine (29) CARL / ABRC libraries’ websites. This scan was initially undertaken prior to the creation of a Phase I survey of Canadian academic librarians’ use of social media. The social media tools ‘on view’ at Canadian academic library websites were determined by doing a simple inventory at each CARL / ABRC library website. The investigators created a list (see appendix I, page 5) of Canadian academic libraries’ use of social media and sent it for feedback to social media contacts in each of the CARL / ABRC libraries. All suggestions for improvement were included in appendix I. Not surprisingly, there is considerable heterogeneity in the use of social media in CARL / ABRC libraries. As of 2011, the most commonly-used tools are blogs (individual and group blogs); Facebook and Twitter (social networking); delicious and Zotero (social bookmarking and citation management); collaborative writing tools such as wikis and GoogleDocs; and, the multimedia- sharing sites YouTube and SlideShare. Undoubtedly, there are CARL / ABRC academic librarians across the country experimenting with and using other tools (i.e. such as Gowalla and Foursquare) in innovative ways and we seek to document these approaches more fully in phase II of our study. Methods In 2010 and 2011, the researchers examined the main websites of twenty-nine (29) Canadian academic libraries (CARL/ABRC-members) as well as browsed their underlying directories and Giustini – May 2011 Environmental scan’ of social media usage in CARL/ABRC libraries 1
  • 2. branch webpages. As evidence of social media usage was encountered, the library’s use of the tool was documented. All upper level pages at these Canadian library websites and pages below were examined and examples of social media usage were inventoried. The challenge was to ensure a complete examination of the websites using different main library and branch page addresses. However, the researchers used other search methods to ensure completeness of the environmental scan including identifying the tools most prominently-displayed on home library pages and advanced Google searching by library domain name. The resulting document captures an overview of the major social media usage at CARL/ABRC’s twenty-nine libraries in mid-2011. Observations Social media usage in CARL/ABRC libraries in 2011 varies considerably from institution to institution, and from region to region. Institutional and regional variations are obvious by comparing larger CARL / ABRC member libraries (e.g., UBC, UofT, UofA) and smaller institutional members (e.g., Brock, Dalhousie, Carleton). Judging from the evidence on library websites, there is widespread interest in the use of social media at CARL / ABRC libraries: blogs, instant messaging tools and social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are used with some frequency and some libraries announce their participation in social media prominently. However, with so little homogeneity in adopting social media in CARL / ABRC libraries and no obvious library leading the cause, one has to look for clues about best practices. This can be done by looking at the academic writing of the librarians at CARL / ABRC member libraries and by having conversations with the librarians at those institutions. These conversations comprise a major component of our work in phase II of this study. Giustini – May 2011 Environmental scan’ of social media usage in CARL/ABRC libraries 2
  • 3. The difficulty in listing Canadian academic libraries’ usage of social media with some accuracy is compounded by the sheer range of activities behind the scenes at these libraries. There is some indication that social media staff training programs are gaining some traction in the larger libraries (UofA, UBC, UofT) and some librarians have started to debate the impact of tools such as Facebook and Twitter in the academy (not to mention new technologies such as smart phones, iPhones and mobile devices). In phase II of our study, we aim to uncover why several CARL / ABRC libraries have abandoned some of their initial projects (such as blogs) either for extended periods of time or completely. We hope to extract additional information in phase II of our study about academic librarians’ successes and failures in using social media in their professional activities. Statistics arising from our inventory of CARL/ABRC websites: • All CARL/ABRC libraries (29) use RSS feeds in one way or another and a majority use blogging tools (27/29), forms of chat (25/29), Facebook (24/29) and/or Twitter (21/29). We believe academic librarians also use these tools personally in their work but we await for some more accurate numbers and data in phase II. • The use of photo-sharing and social bookmarking tools is less common in Canadian academic libraries than the researchers believed or that the numbers would indicate. Individual librarians use these tools but not necessarily for professional reasons. Phase II of our survey aims to obtain further information about the use of tools outside the mainstream. • Regarding francophone universities (UQAM, UdeM, Sherbrooke, Laval): some tools in this scan are English-only and it may be true that French-speaking universities are using additional “French language” tools (“media sociaux” or “outils sociaux”). Giustini – May 2011 Environmental scan’ of social media usage in CARL/ABRC libraries 3
  • 4. Five (5) of 29 CARL/ABRC libraries (Calgary, McGill, McMaster, Toronto, York) have hired professional librarians with the responsibilities of an emerging technology librarian (or similar position such as McMaster's User Experience Librarian). At least three (3) libraries have teams of academic librarians who look at the adoption of social media (UofA, UBC, Waterloo) or provide workshops and leadership in their respective libraries. • Top Ten (10) Social Media (categories) most visible on CARL/ABRC websites 1.
