7. Fashion Assignment
What is sustainability?
Take out of a system the same amount of energy that you put in.
A sustainable process is one you can do forever without exhausting resources or fouling the
environment.
Is it possible?
Within the fashion context, we must consider:
People
Processes
Environment
And how they are interconnected
8. Difficulties to consider:
The concept of fashion is one of change again and again and again.
With change you generate waste.
With this change, very little thought is given to the old clothes that you no longer wear.
Today we are society that moves toward overconsumption along with a desire to pay as little as
possible for most products.
Embrace “the rethinking” of the process:
Garment creation (create new design)
Garment use (washing clothes; people through many things)
Garment disposal (recycling)
Garment re-creation (cut your jeans to make a pair of shorts)
Garment reuse to expand the usable life and their meaning
Other areas that must considered:
Maintaining healthy economies
Solving social inequities
Can we consider all areas at once?
9. Solution: Now is the time to generate new ideas to produce new garments with a sense of
ethics , using organic and renewable resources and manufacturing them in humane conditions
that together sustain the planet and the people who design, produce, retail and purchase them.
Possibilities: Design
Produce custom made clothes from an individual body scan
Study the human body, leads to better pattern making.
Use a seamless method of knitting
Uses one yarn to complete one garment without cut and sew.
Increase use of inf. Technology
Lower water temperatures
Launder less frequently
Share equipment with community laundries
Purchase fewer garments and have multiple uses for those garments.
