Overview of Agriculture in Pakistan
As per Economic Survey of Pakistan
(ESP 2015-16), out of total
contribution of agriculture to the GDP
major crops contribute 4.67 percent
to the GDP, other crops 2.25 percent,
livestock 11.61 percent, fisheries 0.43
percent and forestry 0.41 percent
each.
Overview of Agriculture
 And when Pakistan is
compared with the rest of
the world on the basis of
agriculture sector, the
country ranks 9th in wheat
production, 11th in rice
production with an edge of
having aromatic long grain
basmati, 4th in cotton
production, and 14th in
sugarcane with comparative
advantage in mango, citrus
and dates. Similarly, in
livestock it is 2nd in buffalo’s
population, 13th in cattle,
and 9th in sheep and 3rd in
goat while in milk production
Pakistan’s standing is at 4th
place in the world.

 A call center will be established to
cater to the farmers’ requirements
and their connectivity with the
experts through the local extension
agents. Soil sampling will also be a
main component of this project for
soil health diagnostics. The presence
of the extension service will be
increased through newspapers,
primetime on television and social
media including Facebook and
Twitter while we are also reaching
farmers through SMS, robocall, and
call centers. In fact, 5 million
farmers will soon have access to the
latest technology techniques, farm
experts and easy financing through
smartphones. The program has
already been rolled out.
Irrigation Technology ( ‫پاشی‬ ‫آب‬‫ٹیکنالوجی‬ )
 In some cases, flood irrigation
is a soil requirement so it’s not
wastage as commonly
perceived. The KPK government
is working on efficient
management of irrigation
supplies through drip and
sprinkler irrigation
technologies, laser leveling and
bed and furrow techniques.
 The share of subsidy is also very
high. Moreover, irrigation
agronomy has improved a lot.
 Latest moisture meters are
being tested to improve water
efficiency besides, promotion
of ridge and bed planting and
use of laser levelers.

Today, drone technology is
becoming an essential piece of
farm equipment. Farmers around
the world have actually started
using drones to get a bird’s-eye
view of their fields and to
monitor the condition of their
crops. Pakistanis are already
familiar with drones and their
uses, but now with this
technology, it will be used for
helping farming community and
policy makers to estimate crop
size and pest warning activities.
Scientists in University of
Agriculture Faisalabad are
working on it to economize the
use of fertilizer and pesticides
throughout the fields

 Today technology in agriculture is
being developed and applied in
innovative ways with a primary focus
to assist the farmer in enhancing its
production. Information and
communication technologies (ICT) in
agriculture offers a wide range of
solutions to agricultural challenges.
It is seen as an emerging field
focusing on the enhancement of
agricultural and rural development
through improved information and
communication processes. In this
context, ICT is used as an umbrella
term encompassing all information
and communication technologies
including devices, networks,
mobiles, services and applications;
these range from innovative
Internet-era technologies and sensors
to other pre-existing aids such as
fixed telephones, televisions, radios
and satellites.

 Mechanization is on the
rise as it not only saves
time of the grower but
labor too and prepares
land in a very befitting
manner for the next
crop or harvest any crop
without higher wastage
ratio.

  • 4. Overview of Agriculture in Pakistan As per Economic Survey of Pakistan (ESP 2015-16), out of total contribution of agriculture to the GDP major crops contribute 4.67 percent to the GDP, other crops 2.25 percent, livestock 11.61 percent, fisheries 0.43 percent and forestry 0.41 percent each.

Overview of Agriculture  And when Pakistan is compared with the rest of the world on the basis of agriculture sector, the country ranks 9th in wheat production, 11th in rice production with an edge of having aromatic long grain basmati, 4th in cotton production, and 14th in sugarcane with comparative advantage in mango, citrus and dates. Similarly, in livestock it is 2nd in buffalo’s population, 13th in cattle, and 9th in sheep and 3rd in goat while in milk production Pakistan’s standing is at 4th place in the world.

  • 43. Call Center ( ‫کال‬‫سینٹر‬ )  A call center will be established to cater to the farmers’ requirements and their connectivity with the experts through the local extension agents. Soil sampling will also be a main component of this project for soil health diagnostics. The presence of the extension service will be increased through newspapers, primetime on television and social media including Facebook and Twitter while we are also reaching farmers through SMS, robocall, and call centers. In fact, 5 million farmers will soon have access to the latest technology techniques, farm experts and easy financing through smartphones. The program has already been rolled out.
  • 44. Irrigation Technology ( ‫پاشی‬ ‫آب‬‫ٹیکنالوجی‬ )  In some cases, flood irrigation is a soil requirement so it’s not wastage as commonly perceived. The KPK government is working on efficient management of irrigation supplies through drip and sprinkler irrigation technologies, laser leveling and bed and furrow techniques.  The share of subsidy is also very high. Moreover, irrigation agronomy has improved a lot.  Latest moisture meters are being tested to improve water efficiency besides, promotion of ridge and bed planting and use of laser levelers.

Farmers around the world have actually started using drones to get a bird’s-eye view of their fields and to monitor the condition of their crops. Pakistanis are already familiar with drones and their uses, but now with this technology, it will be used for helping farming community and policy makers to estimate crop size and pest warning activities. Scientists in University of Agriculture Faisalabad are working on it to economize the use of fertilizer and pesticides throughout the fields

Information and communication technologies (ICT) in agriculture offers a wide range of solutions to agricultural challenges. It is seen as an emerging field focusing on the enhancement of agricultural and rural development through improved information and communication processes. In this context, ICT is used as an umbrella term encompassing all information and communication technologies including devices, networks, mobiles, services and applications; these range from innovative Internet-era technologies and sensors to other pre-existing aids such as fixed telephones, televisions, radios and satellites.
