Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
2
• E-learning includes all forms of
electronically supported learning and
teaching: both out-of-classroom and in-
classroom educational experiences via
technology.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
3
E-learning is the computer and network-
enabled transfer of skills and knowledge
• Content is delivered via the Internet,
intranet/extranet, audio or video tape,
satellite TV, and CD-ROM.
• It can be self-paced or instructor-led and
includes media in the form of text, image,
animation, streaming video and audio.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
4
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
5
• In the early 1960s, Stanford University psychology
professors Patrick Suppes and Richard C.
Atkinson experimented with using computers to
teach math and reading to young children.
• In 1963, Bernard Luskin installed the first
computer in a community college for instruction,
working with Stanford and others, developed
computer assisted instruction.
• Luskin completed his landmark UCLA dissertation
working with the Rand Corporation in analyzing
obstatcles to computer assisted instruction in 1970.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
6
• Early e-learning systems, based on Computer-
Based Learning/Training often attempted to
replicate autocratic teaching styles whereby
the role of the e-learning system was
assumed to be for transferring knowledge, as
opposed to systems developed later based
on Computer Supported Collaborative
Learning (CSCL), which encouraged the
shared development of knowledge.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
7
• As early as 1993, William D. Graziadei
described an online computer-delivered
lecture, tutorial and assessment project using
electronic mail.
• By 1994, the first online high school had been
founded.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
8
• In 1997 Graziadei, W.D., et al., published an
article entitled "Building Asynchronous and
Synchronous Teaching-Learning Environments:
Exploring a Course/Classroom Management
System Solution". They described a process at
the State University of New York (SUNY) of
evaluating products and developing an overall
strategy for technology-based course
development and management in teaching-
learning.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
9
• Today many technologies can be, and are,
used in e-learning, from blogs to
collaborative software, ePortfolios,
and virtual classrooms.
• Most eLearning situations use combinations
of these techniques.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
10
• The British Open University, and the online
distance courses at the University of British
Columbia began a revolution of using the
Internet to deliver learning, making heavy
use of online discussion between students in
all their programs.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
11
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
12
• E-Learning 2.0 is a type of CSCL system that
came about during the emergence of Web
2.0 From an E-Learning 2.0 perspective,
conventional e-learning systems were based
on instructional packets, which were
delivered to students using assignments.
Assignments were evaluated by the teacher.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
13
• In contrast, the new e-learning places
increased emphasis on social learning and
use of social software such as blogs, wikis,
podcasts and virtual worlds such as Second
Life. This phenomenon has also been referred
to as Long Tail Learning
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
14
• E-Learning 2.0, by contrast to e-learning
systems not based on CSCL, assumes that
knowledge (as meaning and understanding)
is socially constructed. Learning takes place
through conversations about content
and grounded interaction about problems
and actions. Advocates of social learning
claim that one of the best ways to learn
something is to teach it to others.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
15
• In addition to virtual classroom
environments, social networks have become
an important part of E-learning 2.0. Social
networks have been used to foster online
learning communities around subjects as
diverse as test preparation and language
education.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
16
• Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) is
the use of handheld computers or cell
phones to assist in language learning. Some
feel, however, that schools have not caught
up with the social networking trends. Few
traditional educators promote social
networking unless they are communicating
with their own colleagues.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
17
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
18
• E-learning services have evolved since
computers were first used in education.
• There is a trend to move towards blended
learning services, where computer-based
activities are integrated with practical or
classroom-based situations.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
19
• Different types or forms of e-learning can be
considered as a continuum:
1. No e-learning, no use of computers and/or
the Internet for teaching and learning
2. Classroom aids, such as making classroom
lecture Powerpoint slides available to
students through a course web site or
learning management system.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
20
3. Laptop programs, where students are
required to bring laptops to class and use
them as part of a face-to-face class
4. Hybrid learning, where classroom time is
reduced but not eliminated, with more time
devoted to online learning
5. Fully online learning, which is a form of
distance education.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
21
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
22
• A learning management system (LMS) is
software used for delivering, tracking and
managing training/education. LMSs range
from systems for managing
training/educational records to software for
distributing courses over the Internet and
offering features for online collaboration.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
23
• An LMS allows for teachers and administrators
to track attendance, time on task, and student
progress. LMS also allows for not only teachers
and administrators to track these variables but
parents and students as well. Parents can log on
to the LMS to track grades. Students log on to
the LMS to submit homework and to access the
course syllabus and lessons.
• Two popular tools for E-learning are Blackboard
Inc. and Moodle.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
24
• Blackboard Inc. has over 20 million users daily.
Offering six different platforms: Blackboard
Learn, Blackboard Collaborate, Blackboard
Mobile, Blackboard Connect, Blackboard
Transact, and Blackboard Analytics; Blackboard's
tools allow educators to decide whether their
program will be blended or fully online,
asynchronous or synchronous. Blackboard can
be used for K-12 education, Higher Education,
Business, and Government collaboration.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
25
• Moodle is an Open Source Course
Management System. It is free to download
and provides blended learning opportunities
as well as platforms for distance
learning courses. The Moodle website has
many tutorials for creating a program or
becoming a Moodle student.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
26
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
27
• The Internet is a medium for teachers to find
authentic and infinite resource files of texts,
visual stimuli, listening materials, vocabulary,
cultural information, video files, live TV and
radios, newspapers from around the world.
• The Internet also allows for contextualized
real time communication via voice-chat, chat,
e-mails and forums.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
28
• Browsing the Internet creates various
opportunities for learners to take control of
their own learning, especially in foreign
language learning classes, learners can benefit
from
– the authentic content,
– vocabulary and various language practice
opportunities while filling forms for registration,
– searching for e-mail pals and posting questions to
experts,
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
29
– writing reviews for movies, books and etc. on
various blogs and websites,
– looking for perfect holiday places,
– sharing their own views and learning about the
views of others,
– preparing Web-based Projects in collaboration,
– finding images relating the classroom topics;
these in return enable contextual practice and
real time discourse instances to be mastered.
Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel
30
• The Internet provides language learners with
the opportunity to create their own materials
and share these with public in collaborative
contexts as well as real life, Scenario-based
and Problem-based learning environments.

E learning and internet language learning

  • 1. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 1
  • 2. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 2 • E-learning includes all forms of electronically supported learning and teaching: both out-of-classroom and in- classroom educational experiences via technology.
  • 3. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 3 E-learning is the computer and network- enabled transfer of skills and knowledge • Content is delivered via the Internet, intranet/extranet, audio or video tape, satellite TV, and CD-ROM. • It can be self-paced or instructor-led and includes media in the form of text, image, animation, streaming video and audio.
  • 4. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 4
  • 5. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 5 • In the early 1960s, Stanford University psychology professors Patrick Suppes and Richard C. Atkinson experimented with using computers to teach math and reading to young children. • In 1963, Bernard Luskin installed the first computer in a community college for instruction, working with Stanford and others, developed computer assisted instruction. • Luskin completed his landmark UCLA dissertation working with the Rand Corporation in analyzing obstatcles to computer assisted instruction in 1970.
  • 6. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 6 • Early e-learning systems, based on Computer- Based Learning/Training often attempted to replicate autocratic teaching styles whereby the role of the e-learning system was assumed to be for transferring knowledge, as opposed to systems developed later based on Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL), which encouraged the shared development of knowledge.
  • 7. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 7 • As early as 1993, William D. Graziadei described an online computer-delivered lecture, tutorial and assessment project using electronic mail. • By 1994, the first online high school had been founded.
  • 8. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 8 • In 1997 Graziadei, W.D., et al., published an article entitled "Building Asynchronous and Synchronous Teaching-Learning Environments: Exploring a Course/Classroom Management System Solution". They described a process at the State University of New York (SUNY) of evaluating products and developing an overall strategy for technology-based course development and management in teaching- learning.
  • 9. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 9 • Today many technologies can be, and are, used in e-learning, from blogs to collaborative software, ePortfolios, and virtual classrooms. • Most eLearning situations use combinations of these techniques.
  • 10. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 10 • The British Open University, and the online distance courses at the University of British Columbia began a revolution of using the Internet to deliver learning, making heavy use of online discussion between students in all their programs.
  • 11. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 11
  • 12. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 12 • E-Learning 2.0 is a type of CSCL system that came about during the emergence of Web 2.0 From an E-Learning 2.0 perspective, conventional e-learning systems were based on instructional packets, which were delivered to students using assignments. Assignments were evaluated by the teacher.
  • 13. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 13 • In contrast, the new e-learning places increased emphasis on social learning and use of social software such as blogs, wikis, podcasts and virtual worlds such as Second Life. This phenomenon has also been referred to as Long Tail Learning
  • 14. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 14 • E-Learning 2.0, by contrast to e-learning systems not based on CSCL, assumes that knowledge (as meaning and understanding) is socially constructed. Learning takes place through conversations about content and grounded interaction about problems and actions. Advocates of social learning claim that one of the best ways to learn something is to teach it to others.
  • 15. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 15 • In addition to virtual classroom environments, social networks have become an important part of E-learning 2.0. Social networks have been used to foster online learning communities around subjects as diverse as test preparation and language education.
  • 16. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 16 • Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) is the use of handheld computers or cell phones to assist in language learning. Some feel, however, that schools have not caught up with the social networking trends. Few traditional educators promote social networking unless they are communicating with their own colleagues.
  • 17. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 17
  • 18. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 18 • E-learning services have evolved since computers were first used in education. • There is a trend to move towards blended learning services, where computer-based activities are integrated with practical or classroom-based situations.
  • 19. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 19 • Different types or forms of e-learning can be considered as a continuum: 1. No e-learning, no use of computers and/or the Internet for teaching and learning 2. Classroom aids, such as making classroom lecture Powerpoint slides available to students through a course web site or learning management system.
  • 20. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 20 3. Laptop programs, where students are required to bring laptops to class and use them as part of a face-to-face class 4. Hybrid learning, where classroom time is reduced but not eliminated, with more time devoted to online learning 5. Fully online learning, which is a form of distance education.
  • 21. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 21
  • 22. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 22 • A learning management system (LMS) is software used for delivering, tracking and managing training/education. LMSs range from systems for managing training/educational records to software for distributing courses over the Internet and offering features for online collaboration.
  • 23. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 23 • An LMS allows for teachers and administrators to track attendance, time on task, and student progress. LMS also allows for not only teachers and administrators to track these variables but parents and students as well. Parents can log on to the LMS to track grades. Students log on to the LMS to submit homework and to access the course syllabus and lessons. • Two popular tools for E-learning are Blackboard Inc. and Moodle.
  • 24. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 24 • Blackboard Inc. has over 20 million users daily. Offering six different platforms: Blackboard Learn, Blackboard Collaborate, Blackboard Mobile, Blackboard Connect, Blackboard Transact, and Blackboard Analytics; Blackboard's tools allow educators to decide whether their program will be blended or fully online, asynchronous or synchronous. Blackboard can be used for K-12 education, Higher Education, Business, and Government collaboration.
  • 25. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 25 • Moodle is an Open Source Course Management System. It is free to download and provides blended learning opportunities as well as platforms for distance learning courses. The Moodle website has many tutorials for creating a program or becoming a Moodle student.
  • 26. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 26
  • 27. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 27 • The Internet is a medium for teachers to find authentic and infinite resource files of texts, visual stimuli, listening materials, vocabulary, cultural information, video files, live TV and radios, newspapers from around the world. • The Internet also allows for contextualized real time communication via voice-chat, chat, e-mails and forums.
  • 28. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 28 • Browsing the Internet creates various opportunities for learners to take control of their own learning, especially in foreign language learning classes, learners can benefit from – the authentic content, – vocabulary and various language practice opportunities while filling forms for registration, – searching for e-mail pals and posting questions to experts,
  • 29. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 29 – writing reviews for movies, books and etc. on various blogs and websites, – looking for perfect holiday places, – sharing their own views and learning about the views of others, – preparing Web-based Projects in collaboration, – finding images relating the classroom topics; these in return enable contextual practice and real time discourse instances to be mastered.
  • 30. Technology and Language Learning, Dr. Abdel-Fattah Adel 30 • The Internet provides language learners with the opportunity to create their own materials and share these with public in collaborative contexts as well as real life, Scenario-based and Problem-based learning environments.
