Notas do Editor

  1. So, Where are we right now, at UNSW in relation to Sustainability? There is no doubt that in research and in learning and teaching UNSW is an Australian, AND an international leader in sustainability related fields. We’re making a unique contribution to the study of renewable energy technology, sustainable building materials, climate change and global warming research, social impact and study of sustainability practices more generally. So our research in this area is unparalleled in Australia. We have some of the best educational programs in the world. BUT operationally, UNSW’s record does not measure up so well. We’ve implemented some good initiatives, but these are not integrated in a coherent strategy and support for sustainability is divorced from our budget strategy. At Tab 6 of the papers is a report from Deloitte, that examines our environmental management. AT page 6 of that report, you’ll see Deloitte gave us a 2 out of 5. Concluding that when it came to environmental management UNSW was below accepted standards. (21 recommendations) Despite this, publically, UNSW has signaled stated our aspiration to take a strong position on environmental sustainability: to make UNSW the most sustainable campus in the southern hemisphere, We signed international declarations, including Talloires Declaration and the Universitas 21 Statement on Sustainability. In 2007 we said UNSW would develop a Carbon Management Strategy. At Tab 12 of your are outcomes from a high level 2 day workshop in 2007 focused on how to reduce UNSW’s carbon emissions – by the Big Switch. But note also the attendees on page 1 of that Report. By by count just 4 of the 16 senior UNSW staff that attended that forum remain at the University. The plan to join other forward thinking organisations in develop a Carbon Management Strategy is yet to be implemented.
  2. Sustainability has been identified as a guiding principle for UNSW and is included as such is the University's Strategic Intent, B2B documentWe are renown for our outstanding research in this area with some of the best sustainability related educational programs in the world. With UNSW’s 2005 to 2010 Environmental Management Plan due to expire in June, and having appointed a Director for Sustainability, right now is a VERY GOOD time for us to start working toward UNSW setting a standard and a model for how large organisations conduct themselves in an environmentally responsible and sustainable way.
  3. Looking at the B2B house - giving substance to the guiding principle of Sustainability sits well with UNSW’s Aspiration. In Research UNSW as already said – we’re leaders in sustainability related research. In terms of the Student Experience – by engaging students in making our campuses conspicuously environmentally sustainable - we’re not just doing the right thing by the environment. We’re also be making a significant contribution to UNSW being a clearer destination of choice for the best students – who increasingly are deeply concerned about environmental sustainability. And in terms of Community Engagement - adopting a sustainability strategy, involving UNSW staff, students and alumni,,, and external stakeholders in working toward the goal of making UNSW more sustainable. And by publically reporting on our progress toward that goal - This will provide a fantastic, mutually beneficial, attractive opportunity for community engagementOf course at some point these aspirations needs to be underpinned by the appropriate resources and support from across the organisation.
  4. And.. Briefly… we see here that sustainability is singled out as something we all value and undertake to embed into the way we operate. But sustainability also touches on other principles likeLeadership – We’re people concerned about the environment have been disappointed by a lack of, or a failure in leadership at the political level. But the good news for UNSW is that we are just so perfectly placed to step up and play a real, meaningful leadership role in sustainabilityInnovation Initiative and Creativivity– Well the challenge of operating more sustainably will give us an opportunity to showcase our home grown innovation initiative and creativity of our researchers in this space.Actively supporting sustainability is also a great way of demonstrating our integrity and commitment to high ethical standardsSustainability and like corporate social responsibility is also an important aspect of equity, equal opportunity and diversitySetting sustainability goals and reporting honestly on our progress towards achieving them is also an important to UNSW being Professional, accountable and transparent in the way that we operate
  5. Here, I’ve just taken the objectives and strategies in the B2B for the areas of Research, Student Experience and Community Engagement and l’ve extracted each of those that directly relate to, and are supported by sustainability.I won’t read them. But it’s instructive to see how interrelated the principle of sustainability is across the board, especially objectives like creating a vibrant campus, encouraging student engagement, global citizenship, being a point of distinctiveness all playing to our strengths. And in Community engagement, sustainability issues will BE a major ongoing area of public concern and debate and a great source and opportunity for engaging with key partners and communities.
  6. Aside from the University’s Strategic Intent – or the B2B - some of the other imperatives for action on sustainability include…Leading by exampleUniversities are expected to lead by example. Be models of environmentally responsible and socially conscious behaviour. Our leadership and expertise across a range of sustainability related disciplines puts us in an excellent position to demonstrate through operational best practice, how a community can work and live sustainably. We will not be able to get away with teaching students one thing in the classroom concerning environmental and social matters, while we all practice something else on campus.  Compliance: Sustainability principles are increasingly being recognised and mandated in Government policy and legislation both domestically and internationally. Adopting an updated strategy forms a key part of UNSW’s environmental management framework. By measuring, reporting and actively monitoring our sustainability performance the University will be facilitating compliance with Federal and State Government sustainability related legislative requirements  Enlightened corporate have enthusiastically adopted sustainability strategies because they know it can improve the bottom line. By making a bigger commitment to sustainability projects we know that UNSW couldsave thousands… millions of dollars in operating expenses. People also want to work and study at organisations that do the right thingIt will also improve our ranking in the son to be rolled out sustainability green table. Corporate Social ResponsibilityLike corporations, universities cannot function without consideration for the social and environmental impacts on the community as a result of their operations. UNSW as a large complex institution has substantial water, energy and resource consumption demands and an important role in social leadership. Climate change and diminishing natural resources make it an essential corporate responsibility that we ensure all activities on our campuses are sustainability and are conducted responsibly. And you just can’t help but notice it Sustainability issues are not front and centre – in our political debates, in business – be it the insurance industry, the mining sector, property developers, food and of course energy companies. Sustainablity is an issue that will not go away and we therefore need to manage it as part of our overall strategic planning.
  7. So what would be included in a sustainability strategy?A Sustainability Strategy has been prepared and a draft is at Tab 2 of the reading materials. A copy of this strategy has already been widely distributed for consultation among professional and academic staff and students.A lot of the areas in the strategy are things that we have targets or plans for. Like water, where we have a water savings actions plan – from August 2006, and an Energy savings action plan from June 2007.
  8. I’ve prepared this strategy - having absorbed probably a large tree trunk’s worth of sustainability and carbon reduction reduction strategies from large corporations and other national and international universities. The key areas to cover - to be an effective and coherent strategy – include:Energy use – both electricity and gasWaterWaste and recyclingThe things that we buyExtraWhen it comes to energy and water – we already know how the movie is going to end.Energy and water prices are doing to go UP.In fact energy prices are expected to rise by up to 64% over the next three years.Water prices are expected to rise by up to 60% over the next four years. The cost of renewable energy is going to come down.
  9. Transport planning - actively supporting public transport, car sharing, car pooling, cycling to campus and reducing our carbon emissions from air flights Supporting some of the good work already underway in planning and development of the campusAnd learning and teachingAnd governance – embedding sustainability into our operations.
  10. While we wouldn’t want to adopt a strategy just to chase some league table ranking but nevertheless you should also know that later this year there will be a Australian Sustainability League Table. If you look at Tab 10 there is a request for UNSW to join a Monash reporting group of Universities and TAFE’s. I’ve done an analysis of the ranking scorecard and compared to other Universities I estimate UNSW probably be at about half way in the list although simply by adopting this strategy and implementing some of the easier things in there – like setting up Energy and Water and Waste Reduction Working Groups would immediately improve our rankingIn the US and UK environmental ranking of colleges is increasingly shown to be a source of research for parents and students in choosing a University.
  11. I just show you a screen shot of the GreenReportCard. It has detailed sustainability profiles for 332 colleges in US and Canada
  12. And here is an example of the first page of report card for Yale. The site is very well done and you can search and compare up to 10 different Universities at a time. The site states that more than 68% of the applicants to the elite Universities rated the environmental performance of the University as a significant factor in their choice.
  13. Monash420 panels on top of the bustling Campus Centre in Clayton - should pump out 100,000 kilowatt hours of electricity a year.130 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year. UNSW arrayIn 2005 we UNSW installed a 42kWp grid-connected photovoltaic system on the Quad roof. The University’s showcase on-site renewable energy system. It produces 42,000KWh of electricity a year. This is less than 1.0% of Kensington campus electricity consumption. The planned Tyree Building will only….

  17. Harvard is one of the worlds greatest universities. While they have just over 21,000 of the best and brightest students and non medical staff of about 2,500 thousand there officeOffice for Sustainability employs 22 full-time staff. [Pause]And there greenhouse gas reduction implementation process engages over 130 university administrators, staff, faculty and students.Harvard set a goal to reduce it’s greenhouse gas emissions by 43% from 2005 to the year 2020. That’s a commitment that is consistent with realising the kind of reductions that the intergovernmental panel on climate change says will be needed in order to keep the global temperatures from rising by 2 degrees centigrade We must do this in a combinations of means ways. Embracing renewable technology in a serious – fair dinkum way! Introducing heating and lighting controls around the campusResponsible behaviour around the campus. Competitions between the colleges to see Using the greenest technology in constructions of our new building and in the renovations of our building.
  18. he university employs 18 full time professionals for sustainability-related work on campus, including a Bike Coordinator, Director of Sustainable IT, and a Sustainability Food Coordinator.Standford has publicly reported carbon emissions inventories, and is committed to reducing emissions. Stanford has reduced greenhouse gas emissions from commuting to below 1990 levels. The Energy Conservation Incentive Program, introduced in spring 2004, sets an electricity budget based on past consumption and lets participants cash in unused kilowatt-hours. Those that exceed their budgets pay the difference out of their own funds.
  19. The university has committed to cutting approximately one-fifth of its overall carbon emissions by 2017.the main campus cafeteria, the university is installing a hydroponic garden to grow herbs and greens for use in dining locations. Dining halls feature food from 20 local farms and offer exclusively cage-free eggs, grass-fed beef, and sustainably caught seafood.
  20. Similar sized privates: > US Leaders: HP, Fuji Xerox, US Government > Australian leaders: WBC, IAG, CXP, SGP.Sydney City Council, the City of LondonYou can see that Sustainablity is being taken VERY seriously by large corporations and our global benchmark universities. In light of this strong trend the areas I have
  21. Legal and regulatory compliance planImplement a strong risk management process to manage environmental risks and reporting of environmental hazards and incidents.Engage an external lawyerUtilise established UNSW compliance framework. Sustainability ReportingReporting on our social and environmental performance presents a challenge as much of the sustainability information is voluntary and not captured within the existing mandatory financial reporting framework. Consequently, the sustainability reporting action group will help facilitate the collection of data and other information across sustainability reporting throughout the University. An annual sustainability report will be approved by the Sustainability Working Group and presented to the Vice Chancellor and then University Council in March/April of each year, soon after the release of the University’s financial report. This report will be published and made available to internal and external stakeholders. A recognised sustainability indicator framework will be adopted to enable tracking of long-term trends and progress against the sustainability objectives. Data collection processes to report on progress are being systematically developed. The new National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 (the NGER Act) and other environmental and social impact reporting, such as under the FOI Act (soon to be the Government Information Protection Act), privacy legislation and the statement of affairs, is likely to be a precursor to mandatory CSR reporting and accountability.

  23. Sustainability is an issue that is not going to go away!Sustainability is one of UNSW’s guiding principles. Our counterparts have strategies and plans that are developed and underway.I’m very confident that the areas that the University needs to addressed. Identified the areas and we have a plan of action. In order for a Sustainability report support bottom up support and top down support. With your support I am confident that UNSW can leverage off our existing strengths in sustainability related fields to truly make UNSW a leader in sustainability
