History
Pakistan is the to all the great
classical Gharana of northern
india. The foremost among these
is the kirana school, whose great
master in pre-independence india
was Ustad Abdul Karim Khan.
His disciple and niece, Malika-e-
Mousiqi Roshan Ara Begum gave
her greatest performances after
independence.
Instruments
Classical Music Gharana
Patiala Gharana
The patiala gharana of classical music was patronized for
many generations by the maharajas of patiala, and
migrated to Pakistan 1947. Ustad Akhtar Hussain Khan
performed in Pakistan, and trained his sons in this style of
singing which combines many different styles. Ustad
Amanat Ali Khan, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, Ustad Hamid Ali
Khan wew his sons, and all three disply the power, veriety
and melody of this family.
Ustad Amanat Ali’s sons, Asad Amanat Ali and Shafqat
• Ustad Amanat Ali’s sons,
Asad Amanat Ali and
Shafqat Amanat Ali
epitomize two different
developments in Pakistan
music.
• Ustad Fateh Ali’s son Rustum
fateh Ali remains true to the
classical style.
Ustad Hamid Ali has trained
his sons classically, but they
also sing fusion music under
the name “Raga Boys”
Sham Chaurasi Gharana
East Punjab has produced two great singer, the brothers
Ustad Nazakat Ali and Ustad Salamat Ali. The Latter’s son
Shafqat Salamat ali is a promising singer today, with a
voice of great power.
Gwalior Gharana
The Gwalior Gharana, that settled in hyderabad, sindh,
before Independence, trace their roots back to mian
Tanseen, who was court singer to the great Moghul
Emperor Abar. This school of singing is related by
marriage to the Patiala Gharana, and counts Ustad umeed
Ali as its greatest exponent.
 Qawwali
Qawwali is another popular genre of Pakistani music,
inspired by centuries-old tradition rooted in spirituality. The
Sabri brothers and Manzoor Ahmed Khan Niazi
internationalized qawwali drawing huge crowds at home
and abroad.
Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a singer of unique talents,
who trained his voice into an instrument of tenderness and
variety. He belonged to a qawwali gharana from East Punjab
and gradually moved from traditional qawwali singing to
asemi-western style of performance in collaboration with
peter gabriel.his compositions have been part of the
Background music of many films
and he can be credited with
single-handedly introducing
Pakistani music to the west.
List of Qawwali Singer
•Aziz Mian
•Nusrat Fateh Ali
• Sabri Brothers
• Meher Ali Sher Ali
• Sher Miandad
• Farrukh Fateh Ali
 Folk Music
 The folk music of Pakistan
represents the real culture of
people: their love and hates,
their joys and sorrows, their
colourfull ceremonies and
festivities, and above all their
spiritual entity. It includes all
the songs and dances
spontaneously originating
among the people of different
regions. For example Waris
shah’s Heer has been sung to a
typical traditional tune to this
day.
 Singer of Folk Music
• Attaullah Khan Isakhelvi
• Tufail Naizi
• Shaukat Ali
• Reshmaan
• Allam Lohar
• Allan Fakir
• Pathaney Khan
• Inayat Hussain Bhatti
 Kafi:
The late Zahida Parveen was a
master of kafi singing. Her
daughter shaida Parveen
possesses her mother’s command
of the form and her devotional
urge. Yet today trends and
perhaps necessity, have led her
away from kafi’s and towards the
geet the ghazal, semi-classical
and folk from. Abida Parveen is
another renowned kafi singer of
sindh, but she to sings in many
other gences.
 Name Singer:
• Abida Parveen
• Sain Zahoor
• Hina Nasrullah
• Sanam marvi
 Gahzal:
• Many artists have been singing ghazals and some have
earned a great name in the history of ghazal recitals.
These include the classical, semi classical as well as the
popular singers of the movie world. However, when we
talk of ghazal in music, it needs to be emphasized that
ghazal singing is a distinct art from classical singing, for
skilled classical singers are not necessarily good ghazal
singers as well.
Ghazal Singer Name:
• Amanat Ali
• Asad Amanat Ali
• Begum Akhtar
• Farida khanum
• Ghulam Ali
• Iqbal Bano
• Rahat Fateh Ali
• Malika Pukhraj

• Munni Begum
• Noor jehan
• Reshma
• Shafqat Amanat Ali

 Pop Music
Contemporary pop music in
Pakistan is a combination of
Eastern improvisation, African
rhythms, and Western polyphonic
musical expression, including
interchanging scales. It has more
rhythmic than melodic appeal,
especially for younger listeners,
who fall under the sway of its
almost amorous quality. The best
known among young Pakistani
singers who pioneered pop are
Nazia Hassan and Zohaib Hassan,
who learned, composed, and
recorded their songs abroad.
Pop music in Pakistan is
undergoing a healthy expansion.
Young bands enjoy wide exposure
and must compete with talented
new entrants to the field.
Outstanding bands which have
distinguished themselves in the
pop genre include Vital Signs,
Janoon, Strings, Akash and Awaz. A
few of these have gained
international exposure and
recognition when their songs were
aired on satellite television.
