Broadly, e-commerce means doing business over the internet. This implies that either goods can be delivered offline or products can be “digitalized” and delivered online. E-commerce however is marred by serious drawbacks. India only has 100 million active internet users. This implies that the internet usage in India is pretty poor. The problem is further aggravated by the fact that there is low credit card penetration coupled with slow internet speeds and fulfillment issues. As of today e-commerce is merely a 10 billion dollar market in India which is 1/6th of the US market. Despite this gloomy scenario, there are some important trends in e-commerce to look out for. This includes the fact that offline retailers are trying to go online, media biggies are getting into e-commerce, e-commerce platforms are gaining traction and mobile commerce is just beginning to take off, examples being banks and Indian Railways.

The first month’s results of the Smart Grid Index (SGI) show that Smart Grid industry executives have a very positive view of future opportunities for Smart Grid technologies. Utilities were less pessimistic than those in the total sample both for total expenditures and the hiring of new personnel. Almost half of the vendors surveyed closed a new deal last month, while 75% of utilities expect to submit new Smart Grid proposals for budget approval over the next 12 months. Additionally, 79% of respondents believed that Smart Grid technologies could have helped restore power faster after Hurricane Sandy hit the Northeast U.S. This study was conducted by Zpryme and FierceSmartGrid by surveying 240 smart grid executives from November 1st to November 7th of 2012. The survey was conducted online. Please note that percentages may not add up to 100 due to rounding. Three groups were used to inspect for differences: vendors (70% of sample), utilities (10% of sample), and total sample. The data are presented in figures 1 through 9 in this report. Download

Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) is the process by which carbon dioxide is captured from coal fired power plants and stored in either underground, offshore (below the ocean bed) or in mineral deposits, thus preventing it from being released into the air. The process involves three stages: (1) capture of CO2 at point sources (such as power plants) and compression of the gas, (2) transportation through pipelines and (3) sequestration (geological, marine, or mineral). Although long-term costs associated with CCS may be cost-competitive (as indicated in the chart it Part 2), within each part of the process, different technologies exist with varying costs based on their level of development and maturity, elaborated below. CCS is an emerging technology which has still uncertain costs. While feasibility studies and pilot projects have been undertaken, large-scale commercial demonstration projects have not yet been carried out, although some are in planning stages. Cost uncertainty also exists around site-specific variability.

2011 has been touted as “the year of the plug-in electric vehicle”. With domestic fuel prices up 30 percent since last year, drivers are feeling pain at the pumps. Automakers have heard the cries of American wallets and have delivered a fleet of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs). The Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt are the first in a new generation of PEVs. The Leaf, a full PEV, runs entirely on a battery powered by the electric grid. The Volt is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) that runs on a grid powered battery but also has a conventional engine fueled by gasoline. The Volt can travel between 20-50 miles on a single charge while the Leaf can travel over 100 miles. Regardless of a driver’s selection, the charging costs of both vehicles are less per mile than gasoline or diesel – approximately three cents per mile for EVs versus 12 cents per mile for conventional engines.
