4. Functions
Metabolism of carbohydrates, fats & proteins
Normal growth and development
Immune system
Vision, eye fatigue, eye lens, cataracts prevention
Migraine headaches Athletic performance
Required for activation/
Healthy skin, hair, nails support of B6, folate, niacin,
vitamin K
Antioxidant properties
Nervous system Proper function of RBC
5. Energy Metabolism
Coenzyme forms
FMN Flavoproteins FAD
Flavin mononucleotide Flavin adenine dinucleotide
FAD <-------> FADH2
6. Antioxidant production
Glutathione: antioxidant responsible for preventing
cellular & tissue damage from oxidation.
Riboflavin allows Glutathione Recycling to take place.
Riboflavin is the cofactor for Glutathione Reductase
enzyme.
9. Migraines & Athletic
performance
Can reduce both attack Athletes had sufficient
frequency & number of B2 concentrations
days with migraine. Not compared to non-
severity. athletes.
59%+ improvements
with 400 mg
10. RDA

12. Ariboflavinosis
Deficiency in Riboflavin
Primary B2 deficiency: Poor vitamin sources in ones
daily diet.
Secondary B2 deficiency: Conditions that affect
absorption in the intestine, body can’t use vitamin, or
increase of excretion.
Always accompanied by deficiency in other vitamins.
13. Deficiency symptoms
Sore throat, cracks and
redness at the corners of
mouth, painful/smooth/
purple red tongue,
inflammation characterized
by skin lesions covered Eyes become bloodshot,
with greasy scales itchy, watery, sensitive
to light
14. Toxicity
Low solubility keeps B2 from being absorbed in
dangerous amounts.
Excess amounts is excreted in the urine = Bright
yellow.
1998, Institute of Medicine at the National
Academy of science decided not to set a tolerable
upper limit for Vitamin B2.
