3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?
1.
2. To collect my audience feedback, I created a survey on Survey
Monkey and shared the link with friends, family members and
other Media Studies students. This allowed me to distribute my
survey to a large sample and gain quantitative data that I can
analyse.
A large percentage of the audience said they believe our video is a
good reflection of the alternative-rock genre. However, 12.5% of
the audience said that they didn’t feel the video was an accurate
reflection of the genre. This is a criticism we can acknowledge
because we broke away from the conventions of the alternative
rock genre, as these videos are usually very performance-oriented,
but our video was entirely narrative-based so may not give the
audience a feel for the bands personality and stage presence. This
could mean that the video is not being effective as a promotional
tool, however, we believe we were successful in creating a
memorable music video and this is a good way of promoting sales
of a song.
I also asked “do you think our album cover and digipak
complements our video? 100% of the audience said yes. We were
happy with this feedback as we paid close attention to making sure
there was a strong link between the video and the ancillary texts,
particularly by making sure we had recurring themes and images
across all of our products.
3. We received very positive feedback when asking our
audience to rate the camerawork and editing in our
video. 100% of the audience rated the camerawork in
our video as excellent. I am very happy with this
feedback because a lot of effort went into camerawork
and I felt it was one of the strongest aspects of the
video as we used a wide range of complex shots.
Because we were limited in terms of technology, we
used unconventional and innovative methods to
achieve certain shots, such as climbing up a tree to
achieve a high angle shot of the couple lying dead,
using a skateboard to film tracking shots and the
camerawoman getting into the river to film the couple
walking into the river. Despite the filming process being
challenging, this feedback tells us that it has paid off as
we have achieved our desired effect. For the editing of
our video, the feedback consisted of excellent and good
ratings. I expect this is largely due to the shots being in
time with the beat of the music which is an important
characteristic of real pop music video.
4. The majority of our feedback for this question
was positive, with 62.5% rating it good, and
12.5% rating it excellent. I think this is because
the narrative of our video is very interesting
and compelling as it combines a tragic love
story plot with horror characteristics. 12.5% of
the audience, however, rated the narrative
average. It is understandable that we received
some criticism because it is a dark, shocking
plot about suicide so will not appeal to all
audiences. Another issue with the narrative
may have been that the structure is quite
complicated and difficult to follow. For
example, we repeated the bike shots 3 times as
a way of resetting the narrative and separating
each death, which may not have come across
to the audience as they could be left confused
when the characters had just died and were on
the bikes again.
5. When asking the audience to rate the visual style of
our video, we received quite mixed feedback as 75%
said the visual style was good to excellent and 25%
said it was average. I was quite surprised by the
“average” feedback because we paid close attention
to aesthetics when planning our video as wanted our
video to reflect the beauty of our original song, so we
selected the location Dovestone’s, a very rural area
which is renowned across Manchester for it’s stunning
landscapes, which we felt would help us to create
aesthetic enjoyment. I feel that the visual beauty is
most prominent in the beginning montage of nature
shots establishing our picturesque location.To
address criticisms, I would cut out uninteresting
actions such as the characters taking the rope out of
the basket, and replace it with more beautiful imagery
to create the romantic feel we originally intended. I
would also make changes in the editing of our video
by giving it a higher saturation to make it look more
lively and vibrant as the colours are quite dull.
