Notas do Editor
The presentation will discuss blogging at Wodonga TAFE and in particular its usefulness in teaching
and learning with students and also as an entry point to Web 2.0 tools for teachers new to online
teaching.
The presentation will discuss:
Corporate blogging: The development and ongoing issues of corporate blogging using
Wodonga’s Blended Learning in Practice blog as an example.
Educational blogging: The development and ongoing issues of incorporating blogging into
teaching practice using Wodonga TAFE’s Interior design teachers and students as an
example.
Small regional TAFE focusing on-
2008 large Training Provider of the Year
from certificate I to advanced diploma level in a range of industry areas.
Specialist training centres including-
The National Industrial Skills Training Centre
Motorsports Training Australia
Strong support from the Executive (tech savvy Executive)
Clear direction
Reasonably autonomous brief
This is where we’re heading; we’re not there yet ‘but working on it’
How or where does blogging fit?
It’s not an ‘all or nothing’ proposition-
F2F delivery
Distance
RPL
Blogging fits well within any definition that I’ve found
Constructing meaning -> Students ‘report’ in their own particular way/style
It’s not about regurgitating facts
Learning becomes more of a continuum which is reflected in a blog by the learner
The previous slide is a good analogy of Web 2.0 perceptions
Too many options
Which one is the ‘best’
Too many accounts/passwords
The analogy- Compact, appealing to some, awful to others
Blogging is one part of a puzzle but a pretty compelling tool for teachers & learners
Why blogging and how does it fit with WIOT’s vision
How does this fit with yours?
It can sit discretely from an LMS (more later)
Does your RTO have a strategy that can be easily expressed?
Do you ‘own’ it?
Do you believe in it?
What is best for your students -> line of least resistance
Housewatch example
Building design students- visual, kinesthetic cohort
Assessment- write in a ruled book what transpires over the course of a residential dwelling being constructed
Changed to a blog- Visual, Auditory, reading/writing
Comments by teachers and students
Showed greater depth of understanding than just ‘the words’
Constructivism (pardon the pun)
Blog design- an extension ‘of self’
Regarding shared-
Public
Private
Personal experiences-> Constructivism
Discuss
Comment
Again- public or private (public or private in Moodle too)
Constructivist
Visual
Constructivism
A pretty good collection of verbs and adjectives
7 needs
Lets not get caught up that this has to be all about assessments and the compliance
It can be about some, or all of the above
It may be a way of engagement
It might become the genesis of an ePortfolio
From a teachers perspective
From a learners perspective
Look at this from your teaching and learning outcomes perspective-
As a teacher what do I have to offer?
Is the offer of any value?
Does it create a low ROI value?
Private
If you’re concerned about content & ethics
Nursing placements
Apprentice worksheets
It can be a one way flow or both- you choose, or perhaps your students
(Start to introduce Moodle into the conversation)
Public
Commenting on project development/progress
It can be just one way-> block comments
Who’s comfort zone?
Teacher
Learner
Mindful of learners-
Skills & abilities
Personality
Intended outcome(s)
Comments/Feedback
From classmates
From the ‘blogosphere’
Ease of use
Can you type
From home/school
Cost
Free
Flexibility
Templates as a starting point
A blog for each project/assessment
A blog for each unit
A blog for the course
Take the picture with the iPhone and post now!
Wordpress is the choice of WIOT
In house hosting
Many staff already blog
Why?
On-going consistent message
Ease of access
Part of an active learning strategy
‘Living’ social media
A blog by itself corporate wise isn’t enough- you need a driver, another channel of promotion
