TASK 1
Focus Group on Student Talk Radio
To gather feedback for my news production I did a focus group with my classmates when most of them were
present before lunch.Damien played my news production from sound cloud on the projector whileI handed
out lined paper and pens for my classmates to write their feedback on, I gave them 9 sub-headingquestion’s
so they knew what they had to write about and they were ‘Do you likethe sound effect’s used?’ ‘What do you
think of the Vox Pops E-Cigarettes VS Cigarettes?’ ‘Did you likethe interview with Jess Lishak?’‘What is Olivia’s
speakinglike? Is itslow,or too fast?’ ‘Does Olivia sound confident?’‘Were any of the interviews too long or
too short?’‘Do you likethe way the news radio showis puttogether?’ ‘What is your overall opinion on
Student Talk?’‘What could be improved?’ and then collected all of the papers at the end to gather my
feedback.
Here is the feedback from the student’s.
Do you like the sound effect’s used?
1. Yes I think the sound effect at the start of the radio show was very good to introduce with.
2. They were alright there wasn’t a lot used but when they were they were used in the right way.
3. Yeah they were good.
4. I think the sound effects used are a bit over used but it worked.
5. Yep.
What do you think of the VoxPop E-Cigarettes VS Cigarettes?
1. I liked it becauseshe asked the question then put the responses of the people she had interviewed
after each other instead of askingthe same question for each person.
2. It was cool and the responses were funny.
3. I can’t believe how many people smoke e-cigs in our class.
4. Yeah itwas informative, Oliviadidn’tgiveus much info in the interviews but the answer’s did so that
was a good way of getting information.
5. It was good but I didn’t followbecause I’d forget what the question was.
Did you like the interview with Jess Lishak?
1. Yeah shehad a lot to say about reclaimthe night.
2. Yes I did I also liked the way Oliviaintroduced the radio with interviewing someone and then you can
hear a chant and then it goes into the interview.
3. It was very informativeso I liked it.
4. I liked jess’s accenta lot but couldn’t really hear her.

Were any of the interviews too long or too short?
The lastone I think it was for reclaimthe night dragged on a bit
The lastone dragged on but itwas informative
No I think they were all a good length
No
Nope
Do you like the way the news radio show is put together?
Yes I really likethe way sheintroduced reclaimthe night, it wasn’t a normal introduction itstarted off
with an interview with an outsider and then you could hear the chantingin the background which I
think was really well puttogether and it sounded excitingcompared to the other two.
Yeah I do, it was funny the way she put the e-cig’s one together.
Yeah itsounds very good
Yes
I likeit especially the lastone
What is your overall opinion on Student Talk?
It was great!!
Very informativebut friendly at the same time
It was really well put together, her speakingwas an overall 4 stars becauseatsome points she did
stutter but that is expected, the sound effects were great.
My overall opinion is thatthis radio news show‘student talk’is excellent,it’s girly as well so I was
interested in it.
It was really good, could be improved on though.
What could be improved?
Her speakingcouldbe improvedonlikewhere she stutteredortalkedabittoofast or
unnaturallyshe couldhave waitedtill the endof herrecordingsandgone overthe bitshe
struggledwithbecause bythattime she wouldhave feltmore atease.
She couldhave addedmore soundeffectstomake it funnier.
I don’tknowbecause Ithinkit wasall good,just improve onherspeaking.
I didn’tlike herfirst bitwhere she talkedaboutthe little girl whowasmurderedIthinkitwas
verystrongand then she wenton to somethingthatwasveryweakcompared,soI thinkshe
couldhave chosenanotherstoryto talkabout.
Nothing.

I havegathered all of my feedbackfrommy focusgroup and can safely say they all gavea
balanced feedback, nottoo many negativesand nottoo many positives, they havegavemea
fewthingsto workon and a few thingsto be proud of.
I think that my audiencefeedback revealed most of my strengths and weaknesses. I can certainly progress on
my speakingwhere I stuttered or talked too fast. They also gave a good point on how I could have waited till
the end of my recordingin the studio to then go over parts where I stumbled over my words because at that
point I would have been more relaxed and comfortable ‘she could have waited till the end of her recordings
and gone over the bit she struggled with because by that time she would have felt more at ease’ so I will
definitely keep that in mind for the future. My weaknesses I would say areperhaps my speaking, the audience
made a clear pointabout my speakingin their feedback ‘her speaking could be improved on like where she
stuttered or talked a bit too fast’ going back to the Vox Pops interview I wasn’t very clear on my questions so
that is something to definitely improve on as it’s no good if the listeners can’thear your questions.
My target audience for my radio news show ‘student talk’is clearly targeted at student’s, I think it would’ve
been a bad idea to try and get feedback from people outside of the collegelikeadults as they aren’t students
and would not be ableto relate or find interest in my news stories.I also think atthe start my news bulletin
summaries could be amended on, for instancewhen I had finished givinga summary about a news story that
was coming up in the show I could then have added a jingleso itgave breathing time, and also time for the
audienceto take in what had justbeen said.
I am confident that my intro was faultless for my news story about ReclaimThe Night, not only becauseof the
positivefeedback I got for itbut also becauseitgives you a vibeand a sense of happiness, chants alwaysmake
me feel strongno matter what they are about so I can imaginethey will beableto give the student’s who
listen to it a feeling of safety and it would also make women feel proud. Furthermore my interview subjectfor
Reclaimthe night, Jess Lishak is a very powerful woman and she was the leader for Reclaimthe night so she
knew what she was talkingaboutand knew exactly what to cover in the interview so she gave the audiencea
bigidea of what Reclaimthe night was all about, she is a very stronglink and I don’t think I could have gotten
anyone better to interview for my news radio show.
