Review of urban flood risk mapping methods to guide risk reduction strategies. Tiered vulnerability assessment for urban storm (overland pluvial and sewer), sanitary / wastewater and riverine systems is illustrated from "Flood Plain to Floor Drain", consistent with the author's design standards guideline for best practices and projects in existing communities. Example risk mapping / tiered vulnerability evaluations in Markham, Ontario and Stratford, Ontario are shown emphasizing where simple and intermediate risk assessment can guide no-regret, practically deployed policies and programs to reduce urban flood risk, and there advanced risk assessment can guide minor and major capital projects as part of more comprehensive studies in high risk areas that warrant infrastructure investments to lower flood damages in specific local systems. Presentation was made as part of the Ontario Urban Flooding Collaborative organized by Green Communities Canada.

The process of forecasting the rainfall after two or less than two-hour is known as Rainfall nowcasts(RN). The model which predicts such very short-term storms is referred to as the Rainfall Nowcasting model (RNM). Due to the high amount of variability involved the development of accurate nowcast models is a challenging task. Due to the increase in climatic variability and urbanization, the need for such models, for the design and development of accommodative infrastructures is increasing. That is why five of the most important research topics related to rainfall nowcasting are delineated. With the help of various data science techniques, one can use it for forecasting.

CLR hosted a Friday Forum webinar on February 22 titled 'Robust impact patterns: an approach to account for uncertainties in local sea-level rise vulnerability assessments', led by Jackie Yip of University of British Columbia. While sea-level rise (SLR) is an inevitable effect of climate change, there are deep uncertainties regarding when and how SLR can impact society, which act as a significant barrier to adaptation. Recent literature calls for a shift from seeking optimal adaptation options to robust options that can perform reasonably under a range of possible futures, embracing uncertainties rather than eliminating them. In response, this study develops a new approach, the Robust Impact Patterns (RIPs) method, to help decision-makers account for SLR impact uncertainties in adaptation planning. The method utilizes the pattern recognition capability of machine learning to transform thousands of local SLR impact maps into a small number of impact patterns that are robust across multiple futures, thereby processing an otherwise vast and overwhelming volume of impact information. Jackie Yip is a Consequence Analyst at Kerr Wood Leidal, with experience in a range of climate vulnerability and resilience projects. Before joining KWL, she completed her Ph.D. at the Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability of UBC, where she conducted this presentation’s research in partnership with the City of Vancouver. At the organizational level, Jackie was also a technical lead at Fraser Health, where her work focused on improving the resilience of healthcare facilities in the Lower Mainland to extreme events, including flooding and extreme heat. More broadly, she has led the design of Resilient-C, an online platform connecting Canadian coastal municipalities to share knowledge and collaborate on reducing risks to coastal hazards.

This presentation represents initial efforts to down scale a global flood vulnerability model developed in a cloud based computing tool Google Earth Engine for the noncoastal “upstate areas” of the State of New York. This customized New York application of the model is the result of collaboration with colleagues at Yale University. The model analyzes social and physical vulnerability to riverine flooding based on multiple data inputs, outputs the high risk areas for flooding, and runs statistics on the population living in the flooded zone. Initial results examine the ability for the model to predict risk for a specific storm area, county, or watershed in 1-30 seconds. Future work requires further testing and validation of the model, a more advanced algorithm, and dynamic user-friendly interface for public risk communication of both underlying vulnerability and an early warning system.

A presentation for the 13th edition of the International Conference on Computers in Urban Planning and Urban Management (CUPUM) takes place in the Faculty of Geosciences of Utrecht University on 2-5 July 2013 at the Uithof Campus in Utrecht, NL. Urban growth studies have attracted considerable attention over the past two decades. This article reviews the driving factors been identified and studied in cellular automata (CA) urban growth modeling. Over a hundred articles published between 1993 and 2012 were selected and reviewed. The driving factors were extracted from the transition rules and classified according to their similarity and mechanism in influencing urban growth. Our analysis shows that researches between 1993 and 2000 mainly focus on using geomorphological factors while recent studies tend to also include socio-economic factors, resulting in more sophisticated urban CA models. Nevertheless, the human-behavior factors impacting urban growth are generally under-represented. Geographically, more applications of the CA urban growth models have been seen in the developed countries compared with those in the developing countries, suggesting substantial work needed to address issues in understanding and modeling rapid urban growth in the developing countries.

Ultrasound color Doppler imaging has been routinely used for the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases, enabling real-time flow visualization through the Doppler effect. Yet, its inability to provide true flow velocity vectors due to its one-dimensional detection limits its efficacy. To overcome this limitation, various VFI schemes, including multi-angle beams, speckle tracking, and transverse oscillation, have been explored, with some already available commercially. However, many of these methods still rely on autocorrelation, which poses inherent issues such as underestimation, aliasing, and the need for large ensemble sizes. Conversely, speckle-tracking-based VFI enables lateral velocity estimation but suffers from significantly lower accuracy compared to axial velocity measurements. To address these challenges, we have presented a speckle-tracking-based VFI approach utilizing multi-angle ultrafast plane wave imaging. Our approach involves estimating axial velocity components projected onto individual steered plane waves, which are then combined to derive the velocity vector. Additionally, we've introduced a VFI visualization technique with high spatial and temporal resolutions capable of tracking flow particle trajectories. Simulation and flow phantom experiments demonstrate that the proposed VFI method outperforms both speckle-tracking-based VFI and autocorrelation VFI counterparts by at least a factor of three. Furthermore, in vivo measurements on carotid arteries using the Prodigy ultrasound scanner demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach compared to existing methods, providing a more robust imaging tool for hemodynamic studies.
