This document summarizes a BA (Hons) Professional Practice program in Information and Libraries Management. ![BA (Hons) Professional Practice (Information & Libraries Management)<br />Information for Intending Applicants<br />BA (Hons) Professional Practice is a flexible programme designed for those working in libraries and information management positions who would like to work towards a professional qualification recognized by the Chartered Institute of Library & Information Professionals (CILIP). Those who have experience in working in the sector, can, with the successful completion of this programme work towards individual professional accreditation by CILIP.<br />The course uses, at its core, the award-winning work based learning approach developed at Middlesex University for which they received a Higher Education Centre of Excellence award in 2006. This is combined with a taught element provided by Thames Valley University who run professionally accredited courses in Information Management. CILIP & Foundation Degree Forward are actively involved in steering the overall coherence of the program. <br />The course is flexible and each individual, depending on their particular experience or knowledge, will negotiate a program specifically designed to suit them and their professional context. The major part of the programme, apart from the Thames Valley taught modules, is work based. Therefore, there will be minimal disruption to professional practice and because there is scope for work based projects there will be an added benefit to employers and organizations. The pathway to the award starts with Recognition & Accreditation of Learning (RAL). This module informs the direction of the remainder of the program and the maximum number of credits available is 240 credits of the 360 credits required for an honors degree. The learning can come from experience, previously held credit bearing courses, training courses undertaken e.g. CILIP or in-house, as they relate to professional practice. <br />The RAL module involves constructing a claim around areas of learning that identify with the CILIP Professional Body of Knowledge. Each area of learning will be evidenced and a contextual claim presented about each area in order to secure credits towards a degree. The Work Based Learning Framework in Middlesex has a range of shell modules at various levels and credits in order to allow this. These modules cost £290 per 10 credit points.<br />A formal statement on the application of ethical principles to professional practice will have to be made as part of the Program Planning module and process. In addition, at the Program Planning stage, the award title is negotiated by the student in order to reflect professional context and/or career aspirations.
