WHAT IS OPEN EDUCATION?
Open Education encompasses resources, tools and practices that employ
a framework of open sharing to improve educational access and
effectiveness worldwide.
Open Education combines the traditions of knowledge sharing and creation
with 21st century technology to create a vast pool of openly shared
educational resources while harnessing today’s collaborative spirit to
develop educational approaches that are more responsive to learner’s
needs.

KIENHOC PLATFORM
• Kienhoc is a Vietnamese nonprofit organisation, founded in September
2015, by a team of young Vietnamese with a passion for education.
• Their Mission is to make world-class education accessible for every
Vietnamese.
• Problem is that most MOOCs are available in English and not in Vietnamese.
• They selected MOOCs with an open licenses to translate.
• Translation of courses is done via crowdsourcing with the help of hundreds
of volunteers.

The purpose of the TU Delft Research-based Initiatives (DRI’s), established in 2009, is to contribute to solving societal challenges within four themes: Health, Energy, Global Development, and Deltas, Infrastructures & Mobility. The Initiatives engage with societal and industrial partners, and highlight innovative science, engineering and design. In addition to stimulating multidisciplinary research that is in line with (inter)national agendas, the initiatives also have a strong inspirational effect on students and education.
A couple of courses are the blockbusters, but there is a long tail with courses that still attract at least a 1000 learners
The average is around 5k enrolments. The biggest run is of Solar Energy with more than 70k

Hosting universities select MOOCs (TUD appr. 10), in total appr. 40
MOOCs in the ‘virtual exchange’ portfolio are offered to the university’s own students for credits as well
TU Delft students can use MOOCs as electives, in free minor or in honour’s programme
Additional assessment may be necessary to grant credits for the MOOC. Assessment is under academic conditions
Student doesn’t travel, but exam does
Each MOOC will have a max. number of students
