2. How do
you want to live?
The traditional means for institutional building designs, rarely include input from
those who will reside within its walls. This seems downright crazy.
The percentage of the population over sixty-five years of age, is increasing
exponentially.

Do you see yourself or a family member in need?
3. The Goal
Each of the parties will come
into the process with a
preconceived notion.
Those notions will morph and
mix to form the final design,
through consensus.

5. Although the projects themselves are diverse and showcase nine building types, award winners exhibited several
common themes, among them:
Connection to nature; The Perkins Eastman Research
Collaborative, the 2010 American
Site responsiveness; Institute of Architects Design for
Aging (DFA) Knowledge Community
Connection to the neighborhood;
senior housing study and released its
Intergenerational developments; report: “Design for Aging”

Holistic wellness; departure from traditional
considerations
Aging in place;
Neighborhood/household model and personalized care;
Extensive amenities, offering many options to residents;
Hospitality or resort feel.
Focus on affordability;
6. Forming the Community
Concerned Parties are gathered to meet, utilizing telecommunications to bring in
those who cannot physically attend. Experts, beneficiaries of the outcome, and
veterans of other projects worldwide, are included.
Input of initial ideas: telephone comment line (non-computer users), blogging,
posts on a social network
Models will allow for manipulation of detail both virtual and tangible

9. Gathering Ideas
Using Google Sketchup, or a similar virtual model
construction program, a basic design is created, based on
current research, results of the survey and blogs, etc., and
optimal utilization of the site.
Simultaneously, the tangible model is created, and placed
in established test communities.
Representations of people, either avatars or models, are
moved through both models emulating daily use.
10. Dollars and mandates are real considerations
By inclusiveness, experts in matters of finance, and those
with how-to experience are readily available.
The knowledge gained through this experience is passed
along, in turn securing gain for businesses through the
creation of a successful project
Assessing the value of a product or service through virtual
connections is a common practice in our society.
12. Home

Home
There is no end to the project.
As those who use the building as home, workplace,
community asset, or investment change, so do needs.
Space for the tangible model display is maintained
Virtual access is encouraged for all, regardless of age.
Editor's Notes
----- Meeting Notes (12/15/11 17:00) -----Hi, I have an interest in Geriatrics, as a result of many years' work, and in thinking about connectivity and creativity, my greatest effort was how to use it in my life. I realize this is a bit counter to the concept of just going with the flow, but since it is how my brain works, I had to come in backwards from a goal, to find my way. I am honestly amazed at how these things began to fall into place and make sense, from that point. So, without further delay, this is my vision for a great way to put connectivity into practice.
My contention is that unless one has tons of money, the design of your domicile, is rarely your own, at the later stages of life. Since there will be greater and greater numbers of people in need of housing as seniors, n the not too distant future, these properties are springing up all around us. If you do not see yourself in need of turning to an outside source for help, you may be surprised to know that people from all walks of life and those with impressive work histories, and advanced degrees, find their way to senior housing. In many cases, one difficult illness, can throw all solvency out the window.
The prevailing concept , which is agreed on beforehand, is that all parties will have equal say, EXCEPT the residents. The residents who participate will have an opportunity to form a majority on the final approval panel. Naturally, the budget and code compliance issues trump desire, but aside from those restrictions, the deciding vote will remain in the hands of those whose lives are directly affected.
These ideas and visions take on all shapes , sizes and settings. Forinstance, if all of you would take the crayon feature, and make a mark on your preference out of theses five, it’s will hopefully provide an example of that diversity in choice
The typical buildings constructed over the last fifty years, have very few of the above amenities. Yes, there was always an eye to affordability in the creation of Senior Housing, but aside from private, usually faith-based organizations, there was not much thought to interaction with nature, holistic wellness, resort feel, or even , sadly, aging in place. The buildings were put up as shelter, with an eye to safety and lowest-cost in both construction and maintenance.
Data substantiating project need is used to begin a system of canvassing , surveys and other outreach methods to entice participation. The empowerment derived from inclusion in the project from the ground up, can give those who would normally feel their voice too weak for consideration, renewed confidence
One would expect different priorities in the various parties ideas.Thischart is to show the similarities and disparities in the objectives. For example, All parties require a safe environment. How that plays itself out, is the question. Safe may mean a security system to one, a grab bar or call button to another, and proximity to or distance from an established municipality for others.
The initial process will have a time-sensitive component, sensibly, to allow for deadlines. In effect, the best information can be gleaned from a full cycle of seasons, in those areas where the seasons change. Even where there are not weather changes to consider, the rhythm of the calendar, and events that occur relative to that, provides opportunity for discovery. A set number of review periods would be established well in advance.
As shown in the satisfaction cycle, we need to gather ideas borne from experience. To do so, we need all parties to have a common ground and that, in this case, is the physical dynamic. Although there is 3D printing of functional tools, at this point it is cost-prohibitive, particularly for the housing sector. However, many Tangible User interface options exist for purposes of creating virtual and tangible working models. All furnishings and functional components can be placed and replaced as the models are used. Avatar creations of those who will use the sites, are moved in conjunction with tangible model representations. In the course of daily life/work days, these would-be residents and employees find merit or need for improvement through trial and error.
To continue the connectedness factor, those who would otherwise have been excluded from the process, now begin to have advice to pass along to others, and so it goes. Imagine assembling an advisory panel of octogenarians for the next round.. Too, this will hopefully create a more inviting quality to the world of computers, for those who’ve been “afraid to touch the thing”.From Amazon and Netflix, to evaluation of medical doctors, the open sharing of experiences with people and products is a huge factor now.
Bizrate alone collects over 25 thousand ratings each DAY I’m guessing that each of you has used these sites plenty of times, true? You can mark those you’ve used, maybe placing an exclamation point on ‘favorites’
ONGOING REPAIRS AND RENOVATIONS ARE A PART OF EVERY BUILDING, AND THERE IS NO GOOD REASON TO QUIT THE PROCESS.KNOWING HOW THIS CAN GO, THERE SHOULD BE, ASSERTED BEFOREHAND, A POLICY MANUAL, HANDBOOK OR AGREEMENT WHICH CLEARLY STATES LIMITATIONS ON THE PROCESS. OBVIOUSLY THERE CANNOT BE RECONSTRUCTION FOR EVERY WHIM, BUT WHEN, FOR EXAMPLE, THE MAJORITY OF RESIDENTS REALIZE THAT THE SINKS ARE FITTED WITH HARDWARE NOT SENSIBLE FOR THOSE WITH ARTHRITIS, AS THEY ARE REPLACED, A BETTER MODEL IS IINSTALLED.
Life is short, happiness is elusive, etc. etc, This guy looks like he’s made the younger people seemingly supporting him, very happy. (play laugh track) Let’s make it the best possible place for the elderly in our society. They are to be cherished. Thank you..
