Teacher’s Digital Competency Training
(Level 1- Knowledge Acquisition)
Chapter 5
Network and Data
Communication
• Introduction
• Network Connectivity Devices
• Types of Networks
• Internet for teaching learning
• Online Assessment tools
Introduction
• A network is interconnection of computers and
digital devices
Introduction
• A network can either be a small group of two or
more devices linked together or a high-end network
that links hundreds or even millions of devices
• Network can be used
• to share resources (such as printers and CDs)
• exchange files
• allow electronic communications.
• The sharing of data reduces the need for duplication
and helps to reduce the workload of those on the
network.
Practice; sharing printer
• In Windows 10, you can take a printer, plug it into
one computer, and then print from another.
• The steps has been shown below;
• Before you can share a printer, it must first be set up,
connected, and powered on.
• Click Start > Settings > Devices, then open the
Devices and Printers link. Right-click your printer,
then click Printer properties.
• Click Start > Settings > Devices, then open the Devices
and Printers link. Right-click your printer, then click
Printer properties.
• Users should consider that if you are sharing a printer with
multiple devices running a mixture of Windows client
architectures – 32 or 64 bit-you should enable the “Render
print jobs on client computers” option.
• After setting up your shared printer, you can connect to it
multiple ways. The first method is from within Devices and
Printer.
• Click the Add Printer button, then click the link, the printer that
I want isn’t listed. Choose the Select a shared printer by name radio
box, browse to the printer on your network, and click open.
• You will be prompted to install the driver. Click Next
to complete the installation of the printer.
• That’s it! The printer will now show up in Devices
and printers as a local device.
Network Connectivity Devices
• Equipment that connects directly to a network
segment is referred to as a device.
• These devices are broken up into two classifications;
• End-user devices include computers, printers, scanners,
and other devices that provide services directly to the user.
• Network devices include all the devices that connect the
end-user devices together to allow them to communicate
which includes hubs, bridges, switches, and routers.
• Hub - connect multiple networking devices together.
• Bridge - Bridges are used to connect two or more
network segments together.
• Switch - have a more intelligent role than hubs in
sending the data by MAC address to the destination
address which improves network efficiency.
• Routers is interconnected networking devices using different
network topologies that has also the capabilities of other
connectivity devices.
• Access Point - While an access point (AP) can technically
involve either a wired or wireless connection, it commonly
means a wireless device.
Types of Networks
• Local Area Networks (LAN) is a collection of network
devices connected together over a small area (up to few
kilometers) such as in room, floor or building.
• Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) is a network that spans
a metropolitan area such as a city or suburban area. A MAN
usually consists of two or more LANs in a common
geographic area.
• Wide Area Network (WAN) is interconnect LANs for
instant communication and sharing resources over a large
geographical area.
Internet for teaching learning
• Internet is a global connection of computers connected via a
huge network of telecommunication links.
• allows us to access data and information
• used for streamline and communication of educational resources.
• It supports teaching learning
• for use of various tools,
• access lectures online and refer to relevant resources through various
multimedia formats.
• Internet has evolved into a critical tool for effective teaching
and learning.
• Teachers can employ animation, PowerPoint slides, and
graphics to catch the interest of their students.
Web Browsing
• Web browsing is visiting web sites on the internet hosted
by various companies, organizations, educational
institutions, magazines, individuals that contains wealth of
information.
• A web browser is used for accessing World Wide Web or
a local website.
• Popular web browsers include:
• Microsoft Edge
• Mozilla Firefox
• Safari
• Google Chrome
Activity
Can you identify the above browsers with
their logo below?
Accessing browser (Mozilla Firefox)
• Firefox offers many of the same features as most web
browsers, in addition to its own unique tools.
• While Firefox is relatively simple to use, you'll need to
spend some time becoming familiar with its different
features.
• If you are using Windows, Firefox will add a
shortcut to your desktop. Whenever you want to
open Firefox, just double-click the icon. You can also
access it from the Start menu, or you can pin it to
the taskbar.
• Click the buttons in the interactive below to learn
more about using the Firefox interface.
Uniform Resource Locator
• Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is the address you type
in, bookmark, or click on to get to a place on the Internet. This
is similar to your home address and is where a page or site
resides on the World Wide Web.
Uniform Resource Locator
• The address can be broken down into
• www
• Organization or company name of the publisher of the Website.
• Extension to indicate the type of organization who has published the
Website
.com International business/commercial
.org Non-commercial organization
.net Network and Internet specialist
.edu Educational Institution
.mil Military
.ws website
.tv television
.pro business (also .biz, .info)
• Country code for country specific Websites
.et Ethiopia
.uk United Kingdom
.de Germany
.us United States
Search Engine
• Search engine is web-based tool used to locate
information on the World Wide Web.
• The user will formulate keyword(s) (e.g. Lucy) and a
list of the relevant websites will be provided that can
be accessed.
• Search engines utilize automated software applications
such as robots, bots, or spiders that travel along the
Web, following links from page to page, site to site.
http://www.google.com
http://www.yahoo.com
http://www.msn.com
Using Search Engine
Step 1 − Launch your web browser.
Step 2 − In "Address bar/Location", type the search engine you want to use
and press enter.
Using Search Engine
Step 3 − Type the keyword (s) you want to search in the "search text box"
and press enter.
Step 4 − It displays a list of web pages from which you can select the
content/web page you want.
Activity
• Identifying and retrieving subject relevant information is
one of the key skills for 21st century teachers.
• Search for subject related websites from
http://www.google.com
1. Brainstorming those areas of the course where you are
currently teaching and there is a lack of quality teaching
resources. List them out.
2. Consider what might be the best keywords or search phrases
to ensure you target those areas particularly. e.g. try and be
specific rather than using general terms. Search for 'stamens'
rather than 'plant biology', 'Cicero' rather than 'Ancient Rome'
etc.
3. Then conduct a search and see what results turn up.
4. If you like a site, and want to be able to return at a later stage
then you need to add it to your ‘favourites’. Spend some time
experimenting to find out how to add a site to the browser’s
favourite list.
Electronic Mail
• Electronic mail (e-mail) is a method of sending and
receiving messages from or to a computer using the
Internet.
• Sending and receiving email is extremely cost effective
and is very quick.
• The only requirement to use email is that sender and
receiver need to have email addresses, and then the email
can be accessed from any computer that has access to the
Internet.
• E-mail is the electronic equivalent of a letter, but with
advantages in timeliness and flexibility.
• When you subscribe to an ISP you will usually be given an
email address, for example
Electronic Mail
• All email addresses can be recognized by the ‘@’ symbol
(pronounced at).
• Free email address can be obtained
• www.yahoo.com
• You do not need to subscribe to an ISP, or even own a
computer;
Gmail
• Gmail has email, chat, spaces, and meetings—all your online
communication streams—in one familiar place

  • 9. • That’s it! The printer will now show up in Devices and printers as a local device.
  • 10. Network Connectivity Devices • Equipment that connects directly to a network segment is referred to as a device. • These devices are broken up into two classifications; • End-user devices include computers, printers, scanners, and other devices that provide services directly to the user. • Network devices include all the devices that connect the end-user devices together to allow them to communicate which includes hubs, bridges, switches, and routers.
  • 11. • Hub - connect multiple networking devices together. • Bridge - Bridges are used to connect two or more network segments together.
  • 12. • Switch - have a more intelligent role than hubs in sending the data by MAC address to the destination address which improves network efficiency.
  • 13. • Routers is interconnected networking devices using different network topologies that has also the capabilities of other connectivity devices. • Access Point - While an access point (AP) can technically involve either a wired or wireless connection, it commonly means a wireless device.
  • 14. Types of Networks • Local Area Networks (LAN) is a collection of network devices connected together over a small area (up to few kilometers) such as in room, floor or building.
  • 15. • Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) is a network that spans a metropolitan area such as a city or suburban area. A MAN usually consists of two or more LANs in a common geographic area. • Wide Area Network (WAN) is interconnect LANs for instant communication and sharing resources over a large geographical area.
  • 16. Internet for teaching learning • Internet is a global connection of computers connected via a huge network of telecommunication links. • allows us to access data and information • used for streamline and communication of educational resources. • It supports teaching learning • for use of various tools, • access lectures online and refer to relevant resources through various multimedia formats. • Internet has evolved into a critical tool for effective teaching and learning. • Teachers can employ animation, PowerPoint slides, and graphics to catch the interest of their students.
