Startup mentor is person who help you to establish your startup in the very initial days.
As a startup founder one may have many things to figure out depending upon what kind of business
it is. And founders are not equally skilled in all aspects. So, they seek for person who have done the
same before or experience doing the same.
As a founder one may have an Idea and strategy to execute. But practical experience is the reality. If
founder is missing it, then certainly founder need the mentor with the practical experience.
Now startup mentor are those who knows there is lot to do. Actually everything needs to get started
from scratch. So, they know how much time, energy and focus required to mentor and support.
They would help so that you make your path and survive in the economy. Once you survive the
initial challenges, then comes growth mentors, who help you grow your business and presence.
I think there are three things that make a mentor helpful in a startup context.
❑ Experience. A mentor has made practical contact with many founders and startups and has
observed multiple events, repeatedly. This allows him/her to make connections between events,
and establish patterns — and therefore can guide better. IMHO, failure teaches you so much
more than success - probably because I have failed more than succeeded!!
❑ Trust. My mentors/mentees and I have a bond of trust. This means that we can confide in and be
confided in, and will not let each other down, when the chips are down. A mentor provides
confidence, faith and hope in good/bad/ugly times.
❑ Advise. Someone who offers unbiased suggestions about the best course of action to you, is
likely to be a good mentor.
