Why Academic Pathways are Important
• Map academic goals and progress
• Connect academic and student services
• Guide course planning, selection and
sequencing, semester by semester
• Provide continuity and consistency in
advising, coaching and mentoring
• Prompt students to complete math, English,
FYE/SLS, and other general education
requirements early on—in sequence (ideally
in first year at MDC).
• Prompt students who fail or withdraw from
a course to take it again immediately in the
next semester.
What’s New for Fall 2014
• Updates to original 4 pathways
– Biology
– Business
– Criminal Justice
– Psychology
• 5 new pathways in Social Sciences

SLS 1106 (FYE):
1 credit course for students with college-level
course load; must be satisfied by 16th college
credit benchmark
SLS 1505:
1 credit course for students with1
developmental course
SLS 1510:
3 credit course for students with 2 or more
developmental courses
What’s New for Fall 2014? (continued)
3. New foreign language requirement for AA students:
– Requirement is 8 credit hours or equivalent
– Required for both AA degree AND admission to
baccalaureate programs in Florida
– Students can satisfy requirement with proof of
proficiency via CLEP OR 2 consecutive years of successful
foreign language completion in high school
– Students who satisfy foreign language requirement
choose the next course listed on pathway to complete
semester load
What’s New for Fall 2014? (continued)
• Some baccalaureate programs require additional course
work beyond 60 credits for junior standing
• These additional courses are listed in a separate section
below the 60 credit hours on the templates
– As long as they meet FLVC requirements for
baccalaureate admissions
– For questions go to:
Florida Virtual College, Common Pre-Requisite Manual

How to Use the Pathway Template
• All pathways follow the same format
• All AA pathways reflect the 60 credits required for
completion of degree
• Slight differences between the AA and AS pathways
• Students SHOULD take the courses listed on the pathways
IN THESE SEQUENCES
– Best prepare students for further study in transfer major
at transfer institution
• Important to discuss with students what their academic and
professional goals are, and intended transfer programs.
Pathways Contain Important Notes
Note 1: MAT1033 counts towards the 24 credit

Hands-on Student Scenarios
What to do “if” and “when”
Scenario 1: Exempt student chooses to take one or
more developmental courses or non-exempt student
has to complete developmental requirements before
taking college-level courses
Hands-on Student Scenarios
What to do “if” and “when”
Scenario 1: Exempt student chooses to take one or more
developmental courses or non-exempt student has to complete
developmental requirements before taking college-level
courses
• Students should complete their Dev Ed sequence and Gen Ed
courses first, especially math and English.
• Be sure to register student in SLS 1505 or 1510, based on how
many developmental courses student is taking. Students who
take SLS1505 or 1510 do not have to take FYE1106.
• Electives will be moved to the following semester.
Hands-on Student Scenarios
What to do “if” and “when”
Scenario 2: Student changes program of study,
requiring a new pathway
Hands-on Student Scenarios
What to do “if” and “when”
Scenario 2: Student changes program of study,
requiring a new pathway
• Use this opportunity to have a conversation with the
student about changing pathways.
• Think of course economy. Which previously completed
courses can satisfy the student’s new pathway
requirements?
• Revise the IEP to reflect the new pathway
• Student may have to sacrifice some electives to
complete all Florida, MDC and transfer institution
requirements
Hands-on Student Scenarios
What to do “if” and “when”
Scenario 3: Student cannot register for courses
in pathway sequence because they are not
available
Hands-on Student Scenarios
What to do “if” and “when”
Scenario 3: Student cannot register for courses in
pathway sequence because they are not available
• Is the course being offered at another campus?
• Call your Director of Advisement when you notice that a
course is in short supply. He/she will contact the
department chair to ask if more sections can be opened
up.
• Focus on completing the Gen Ed courses, then the pre-
requisites.
Hands-on Student Scenarios
What to do “if” and “when”
Scenario 4: Student fails a course
Hands-on Student Scenarios
What to do “if” and “when”
Scenario 4: Student fails a course
• Encourage students to re-take the course as soon as possible
(ideally, the next semester), rather than waiting to re-take it.
• Explain the implications in terms of the time to complete. If a
student who declares a Biology Pathway fails MAC1105, that
could mean that the student cannot complete begin the
Chemistry series, since CHM1045 has a co-requisite of
MAC1105.
• Adjust the IEP to address the failed course.
Hands-on Student Scenarios
What to do “if” and “when”
Scenario 5: Student must complete foreign
language requirement or student has already
met foreign language requirements
Hands-on Student Scenarios
What to do “if” and “when”
Scenario 5: Student must complete foreign
language requirement or student has already
met foreign language requirements
• For students who have satisfied the foreign language
requirement already,(CLEP or satisfactory completion
of two consecutive high School courses) encourage
them to take other electives, Gen Ed courses, or
recommended courses for junior standing.

  • 19. Hands-on Student Scenarios What to do “if” and “when” Scenario 1: Exempt student chooses to take one or more developmental courses or non-exempt student has to complete developmental requirements before taking college-level courses • Students should complete their Dev Ed sequence and Gen Ed courses first, especially math and English. • Be sure to register student in SLS 1505 or 1510, based on how many developmental courses student is taking. Students who take SLS1505 or 1510 do not have to take FYE1106. • Electives will be moved to the following semester.
  • 20. Hands-on Student Scenarios What to do “if” and “when” Scenario 2: Student changes program of study, requiring a new pathway
  • 21. Hands-on Student Scenarios What to do “if” and “when” Scenario 2: Student changes program of study, requiring a new pathway • Use this opportunity to have a conversation with the student about changing pathways. • Think of course economy. Which previously completed courses can satisfy the student’s new pathway requirements? • Revise the IEP to reflect the new pathway • Student may have to sacrifice some electives to complete all Florida, MDC and transfer institution requirements
  • 22. Hands-on Student Scenarios What to do “if” and “when” Scenario 3: Student cannot register for courses in pathway sequence because they are not available
  • 23. Hands-on Student Scenarios What to do “if” and “when” Scenario 3: Student cannot register for courses in pathway sequence because they are not available • Is the course being offered at another campus? • Call your Director of Advisement when you notice that a course is in short supply. He/she will contact the department chair to ask if more sections can be opened up. • Focus on completing the Gen Ed courses, then the pre- requisites.
  • 24. Hands-on Student Scenarios What to do “if” and “when” Scenario 4: Student fails a course
  • 25. Hands-on Student Scenarios What to do “if” and “when” Scenario 4: Student fails a course • Encourage students to re-take the course as soon as possible (ideally, the next semester), rather than waiting to re-take it. • Explain the implications in terms of the time to complete. If a student who declares a Biology Pathway fails MAC1105, that could mean that the student cannot complete begin the Chemistry series, since CHM1045 has a co-requisite of MAC1105. • Adjust the IEP to address the failed course.
  • 26. Hands-on Student Scenarios What to do “if” and “when” Scenario 5: Student must complete foreign language requirement or student has already met foreign language requirements
  • 27. Hands-on Student Scenarios What to do “if” and “when” Scenario 5: Student must complete foreign language requirement or student has already met foreign language requirements • For students who have satisfied the foreign language requirement already,(CLEP or satisfactory completion of two consecutive high School courses) encourage them to take other electives, Gen Ed courses, or recommended courses for junior standing.
