Editor's Notes
The strategic board consists of 6 people, all of whom you heard from yesterday. Just as a brief reminder these are: Christine Hine, Univ. of Surrey. Sociology of science and technology. Most famous in our sector for writing New Infrastructures for Knowledge production, which looked at how, new information & communication technologies are enabling new forms of science. Many of the problems in our field are social - not just technical. Rod Page- Professor of taxonomy at the University of Glasgow with a longstanding interest in phyloinformatics, biodiversity informatics, and systematics. Rod run as a number of services and blogs extensively of these issues. Dave Roberts - is based at the NHM with me and as the ViBRNAT project manager is there to provide a direct connection to the ViBRNAT management committee. Gregor Hagedorn - Research scientist at the Julius K uhn Institute. Gregor is involved in a number of EU projects and is a significant contributor to TDWG. Gregor is unusual in that he is directly involved in the functional delivery of part of the project. Gregor is involved in WP4 and has a particular interest in identification keys and the role of Wiki based software. Donat Agosti - Donat is an ant taxonomist and has academic affiliations in Switzerland and the USA. Most recently he has been a major champion fighting for free access to taxonomic literature. He is the founding member of Plazi, which is a repository for the storing structured taxonomic literature, and, as been a major advocate of TaxonX. Vince Smith - Finally as ViBRNAT Coordinator, informatician and taxonomist, I'm there to help facilitate the work of the strategic board and channel this to the management committee.
Formal definition fo the Strategic Board is “ A collective of interested individuals who identify with the vision, mission and values of ViBRANT, and who provide insight into the needs of the communities served by ViBRANT to all other the governing bodies”. In otherwords the group provide the contextual vision for the project, and feed this advice nto the project. Exactly how that advice is delivered by the project is a matter for the managemnet committee. The stratgiec board are there to provide their knowledge and experience of the wider landscape of biodiversioty informatics inititives, and feed this through to the management committee.
