Big data helps us to uncover and discover those facets of data which we are not aware of . Using predictive science it helps us to provide insights on which actions can be taken and suggests those actions which will impact the business significantly boosting the revenue or market reach. For example, using large amount of data and appropriate tools, we can categorize different strata of population and build customize products. So whether companies deploy it or not, all depends on what factor constitute the value of company and where the center of value creation lies. It may be money or it may be geographic reach. - Watch this video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELyOl0fkqNM

Is Big Data a Buzz Word or The Next Big Thing
1. Is Big Data a Buzz Word or The
Next Big Thing or Just The
Corporate Crap?
2. Hello!
I am Vivek Srivastava
I am here because I love to educate
people about big data

Truths From Dust”
3. 1.
What Was Before Big Data
Five decades ago when IBM mainframe computers were being used,
no one imagined that they will soon be overtaken by high speed
processing machines that can be kept easily in a briefcase, and when
that happened ,no one imagined that in 2013 there is something
coming called Smart Watch, or the Sixth sense technology
developed which utilizes the search paradigms in a completely new
way which no one ever imagined by providing insights on data using
data and intelligent algorithms
4. “▷ This new era of technology market has emerged with a new thing
called Big Data.
▷ Believe me it’s not just something which a IT company is trying to
sell to other companies which sell consumer products or which make
medicines for patients having chronic diseases.
▷ Big data contains various characteristics such as Volume of data,
variety of data(Images, videos, real time tweets etc.) and velocity of
data(News-feed system of Facebook).
5. How Big Data is Useful for us
▷ Big data helps us to uncover and discover those facets of data
which we are not aware of .
▷ Using predictive science it helps us to provide insights on which
actions can be taken and suggests those actions which will impact
the business significantly boosting the revenue or market reach.
For example, using large amount of data and appropriate tools, we
can categorize different strata of population and build customize
products.
▷ So whether companies deploy it or not, all depends on which
factors constitute the value of company and where the center of
value creation lies. It may be money or it may be geographic
reach.
7. ▷ The real point here is to say that this is considered to be really cool technology,
we haven’t seen it’s full potential yet but we also know that it’s not really going
soon to be obsolete.
▷ In simple words, when we have a really large collection of data or data sets, they
start to become complex, or we can say that the association of data sets goes
high such that it becomes difficult to analyze or find meaningful inferences. This
data is termed Big Data then.
▷ At that point it does not makes any sense to use traditional database
management systems but we are not handicapped in that situation too.
▷ Multinationals have put lots of efforts to develop tools to build technologies
around big data analysis which provides toolboxes for data analysts and data
scientist to play with data.
Potential of Big Data
8. Can’t we use Excel or MySQL
▷ What do we do when we have large chunk of data which may range from tera to peta bytes.
Well, absolutely we can’t think of excel or MySQL to perform analysis but data scientists have
lots of tools such Hadoop, Pig, Hive at their exposure.
▷ Real questions is – is Big Data just a buzz word or something having a potential for future
revenue for companies. Well, it’s both . Technologies come and go, sometimes they get
upgraded and be around for sometime. Big data is one of them with a difference that it is not
really going to end soon.
▷ People have deployed it in variety of ways.
10. Let’s see some critical use cases
▷ Self driving cars developed by Google where the car makes decision using longitudinal and
latitude information about the movements
▷ Most Interesting one- Detection of crimes even before it happens. University of California and
LAPD have collaborated towards building models which might help crime cells to catch
criminals by detecting patterns in their crime history with exact locations. This follows a
very simple theory– If a earthquake happens at some place, there is a high likelihood that
this will be followed by another earthquake nearby in time and space.
▷ Taking this analogy, we can say that if a crime happens today, the self exciting nature of crime
will rise to high probability that consequences of first crime will excite more crime in space
and time.(Theory coined by Professor George Mohler of Santa Clara University) As much as it
interesting it seems, the equation used by them is really simple and uses a Hawkes process
model.
▷ With this algorithm which uses big data tools, they noticed that overall crime rate was
reduced such as 26% reduction happened in Burglary cases and 12 % reduction happened in
property crimes.
11. Well What Do You Think
▷ All above examples sound pretty exciting (at least to me) and also feel little bit
dazzling too. But we can see from all above points is that all this is that there are
companies and organizations utilizing this technology to a high extent though still
it is in research and development phase.
▷ Using Big data needs specialized tools and methods which may not be possible for
all, but it is a technology which companies are considering worth to invest on with
caution as it employs highly advanced computing infrastructure and heavy
algorithms.
▷ Businesses never cared before about data or predictive intelligence which could
generate multi-folds revenues for them, well this has changed the definition of
business now. So future is uncertain, but the trends easily say – “Adapt or Die.”
12. Thanks!
