3. Handling and Separation of SW
• Waste handling refers to activities that are associated with
managing solid waste till solid waste is kept into the containers
used for its collection.
• Solid waste separation at its source of generation helps in
effectively achieving recoverable material and its proper
management.

6. Solid Waste Collection
• Waste collection includes collection of solid waste from
various sources and then hauling of these wastes to its final
location.
• There are two types of collection:
1) Primary collection or Collection Services
2) Secondary collection or collection systems
7. Primary Collection or Collection Services
• Primary collection is the collection of solid waste from the
source of generation.
• The collections points that can be located outside individual or
community serving a number of houses/apartments.
• Different collection services are:
A. Curb Services
B. Alley Services
C. Setout-setback services
D. Backyard services
8. A) Primary Collection-Curb Services
• In these House-owner or resident is responsible for placing the
containers to be empties at the curb on collection day.
• Also he/she should return the empty containers to its original
location.

9. B) Primary Collection-Alley Services
• This system is used where alleys are a part of city, and storage
of containers are done on the alleys
• This collection is similar to curb system.

10. C) Primary Collection- Setout-set back services
• This system is also known as door to door collection.
• In these municipal crew members is collecting, loading and
unloading of waste.
• This is most effective way in solid waste collection.

11. D) Primary Collection- Backyard Services
• The wastes are stored in containers or sealed bags in the
backside of the house
• It is then collected by the collection crew.
