This document summarizes the history and development of the Summa/Search system used at the State and University Library in Denmark. It began as an effort to improve search speeds, flexibility, and the user experience. Key features included integrated search across resources, exploratory search capabilities, and faceted navigation. Over time, facets were improved with proper counts and only the most useful facets displayed. Recent usability testing showed successes like the Google-like search but also opportunities to improve finding articles, discovering facets, and relevancy ranking. Future work may include more full text data, automatic tagging, rights integration and other improvements to continue developing the system around the needs and expectations of users.

Harper Analytics Beyond Usage Numbers

Substantial amounts of digital data are produced in the scientific enterprise, and much of it is carefully analyzed and processed. Often resulting from a good deal of intellectual effort, many of these highly-processed products are published in the scholarly literature. Many of these data - or more precisely, representations of these data - are committed to the scholarly record in the forms of figures and tables that appear within articles: the AAS journals publish more than 30,000 figures and nearly 10,000 tables each year. For more than a decade, the AAS journals have accepted machine-readable tables that provide the data behind (some of) the tables, and recently the journals have started to encourage the submission of the data behind figures. (See the related poster by Greg Schwarz.) During this time, the journals have been refining techniques for acquiring and managing the digital data that underlie figures and tables. In 2012 the AAS was awarded a grant by the US NSF so that the journals can extend the methods for providing access to these data objects, through a deeper collaboration with the VO and with organizations like DataCite, and by spearheading discussions about the formats and metadata that will best facilitate long-term data management and access. An important component of these activities is educating scientists about the importance and benefits of making such data sets available.

Scholars, scientists, academic institutions, publishers and funders are all interested in impact. We have different roles and goals, and therefore different reasons for needing to understand impact; we are therefore asking different questions about impact, and those questions continue to evolve, much as the concept of impact itself is evolving. To answer our different questions, do we need different data, in separate silos, or are we looking at the same data, from different angles? This session gathered researcher, library, publisher and metrics provider perspectives to consider who has an interest in impact, what data they are interested in, how they use it, and how the situation is evolving as e.g. business models and technical infrastructures shift.

Libraries have long sought to demonstrate the value of their collections through a variety of usage statistics. Traditionally, a strong emphasis is placed on high usage statistics when evaluating journals in collection development discussions. However, as budget pressures persist, administrators are increasingly concerned with looking beyond traditional usage metrics to determine the real impact of library services and collections. By examining journal usage in the context of scholarly communication, we hope to gain a more holistic understanding of the use and impact of our library’s resources. In this session, we begin by outlining our methodology for gathering comprehensive publication and citation data for authors affiliated with Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, utilizing Web of Science as our primary data source and leveraging a custom Python script to manage the data. Using this data we discuss various potential metrics that could be employed to measure and evaluate journals in institutional and field-specific contexts, including but not limited to: number of publications and references per journal, co-citation networks, percentage of references per journal, and increases or decreases of references over time per title. We then consider the development of normalized benchmarks and criteria for creating field-specific core journal lists. We also discuss a process for establishing usage thresholds to evaluate existing journal subscriptions and to highlight potential gaps in the collection. Finally, we apply and compare these metrics to traditional collection development tools like COUNTER usage reports, cost-per-use analysis, Inter-Library Loan statistics and turnaway reports, to determine what correlations or discrepancies might exist. We finish by highlighting some use-cases which demonstrate the value of considering publication and citation metrics, and provide suggestions for incorporating these metrics into library collection development practices. In the 21st century the academic library supports both research activities and teaching outcomes of faculty members and students through web-scale discovery services. These discovery services embrace new technologies to provide deep discovery of vast scholarly collections from a one-stop access interface, relying on a central index of pre-harvested data. With unified indexing of full-text library content, users’ experience of search and retrieval is greatly improved. Discovery is changing the way that library users find and access library materials, especially electronic resources. In the opening part of this presentation, I will share my experiences of using different discovery systems – Summon, Primo and Enterprise – in my current and previous roles, in term of differences, strengths and common areas among these tools. Relevant findings from the literature and latest research reports will be sketched. I will also speak of how technical services teams can support the next generation of discovery systems that will help the progress of the digital library field. The presentation will conclude with the approach of technical services towards future discovery.

It contains a strong plea for a focus shift for librarians, but in fact also for companies and organisations. A focus into the environments where the users are, instead of expecting them to come to us, or our resources. Exploration of all relevant user environments for your organization, the use of new web-based technologies with Web 2.0 elements and certainly a more structural technical re-design of (library) information systems is required to deliver your services and resources at the place of need. A simple short-term solution like a QuickSearch Library Toolbar is explained, several other tools to “enrich” the user’s personal search environment, as well as the more long-term ongoing work at the Libraries of the University of Groningen and the Central Medical Library of the University Medical Center Groningen.

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
