There are currently five
significant routes through
the Arctic, three of which
– the Northwest Passage,
the Northeast Passage
and the Transpolar Sea
Route – connect the Pa-
cific to the Atlantic. The
Arctic shipping routes are
maritime pathways that

west while the Arctic Bridge is
an inland route linking Cana-

Navigability
Navigability varies across
the Arctic shipping routes
depending on the weather
and the time of year. Climate
change is gradually making
the routes more accessible
as ice floes recede further for
longer periods each year. The
Transpolar Sea Route is the
least accessible, with only 10
days of unsafe, icebreaker-led
access in 2010. The Northern
Sea Route and the Northeast
Passage are the most accessi-
ble of the five routes.
