How many dogs have chased a garbage truck down the street? And how long have they been chasing them? Garbage trucks and dumpsters have been around for quite a long time and have been a huge benefit to the cleanliness of the world we live it. Life would be much more messy if it wasn’t for the invention of the dumpster. The dumpster is actually the generic name for this storage device. The dumpster was first patented in the 1930s by the Dempster brothers in Knoxville, TN. The original dumpster was designed to be used by mechanical arms as well but that process wasn’t perfected until the 50s. In the 1950s the Dempster brothers patented the first ever garbage truck, called the Dempster Dumpmaster. It is very similar to the front-loading receptacle that we still use today. Two large metal arms grab the standardized metal container, lift it over the cab and tip it into the hopper. Then a rearward travelling compactor compressed the garbage stored in the truck. This same compactor also helped push the garbage out the back of the truck when it was emptied. The term “dumpster” is just a generic word referring to any large metal waste receptacle of its type. There are a wide variety of the “dumpster,” but the actual dumpster is a proper brand name. Just as many people refer to tissues as Kleenexes. The brand doesn’t exist in Great Britain and Australia though they still refer to them as dumpsters sometimes. They are also known as “wheelie bin” or “skips.” The proper name for these type of receptacles is a frontloader container. Dumpsters have become a very common useful object over the past 80 years. Dumpsters can be found at many businesses, apartment complexes, schools, offices, and other industrial sites. Many of these locations will have multiple dumpsters to help maintain the cleanliness. People empty their trash from inside the buildings into the frontloader containers. A garbage truck normally empties these dumpsters once a week on a routine pickup. The garbage truck normally takes the rubbish to a trash fill or to get incinerated. A dumpster seems like such a simple invention but the Dempster Brothers patented an invention that has been introduced all over the world. A variety of frontloader containers have been invented to make the junk hauling process easier, but the initial credit for the invention will date back to 1937 in Tennessee when the brothers first patented their container that provides a cleaner environment for everyone.
