Integrated Disability Evaluation System
• Secretary of the Army is charged with assuring the fitness of Soldiers, and
separating or retiring those who become unfit to continue military service
because of physical disability
• IDES combines the Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of Veterans
Affairs (VA) disability processes and uses a streamlined evaluation for delivery
of a total benefits and compensation package.
• For Soldiers referred under the duty-related process, the IDES is comprised of the Medical
Evaluation Board (MEB) and the Physical Evaluation Board (PEB).
• The Army’s first priority for Soldiers suffering from an illness or injury is to ensure delivery
of the highest quality and proper medical attention. If the medical conditions improve to the
point that the Soldiers are able to return to full military duty, they are returned to their units.
23. MEDDAC-J
Medically Not Ready
Provides ongoing surveillance of the Medically Not Ready
(MNR) Soldier’s health fitness status; minimizes health care
hindrances until Soldier is:
• Returned to duty: Soldier is no longer MNR
(rehabilitated, with no on-going medical surveillance required)
• Transferred to a Warrior Transition Unit (WTU) for further
management; or
• Processed through a Medical Evaluation Board (MEB)/
Physical Evaluation Board (PEB)
