2. Every day thousands of job seekers & career changers take the same job search approaches
when they hunt for new jobs. Their all-too-common outdated or ineffective strategies often deliver
zero or few results, wasting their time.
Searching and applying for new jobs is a time consuming task, making it even more important to
focus on ways to avoid wasting your valuable time. Here are some common problems and how
you can get your job search back on track to secure job interviews and jobs.
3. If your only strategy is to rely on online job postings, you’re likely wasting your most valuable
asset as a job hunter - your time. It often feels safer to keep your job search between you
and your mobile or computer, but seriously, you need to diversify your job search strategy
now or you will likely search for a long time.
RELYING ON A SINGLE PLAN OF ACTION
MY TIP:
• Reach out to key people you know from your social, school or business networks
• Go to events where you’re likely to meet new people
• Considering connecting with recruiters and even temp firms
• Hire a professional to help you with your job search and applications
You’ll get some useful insight into the current state of the market in your field and it will help
you to secure job interviews in half the time.

Yes, definitely invest some time filling out online applications, including trying out different
job sites and individual company websites and career pages. But, branch out from there:
4. A lot of job hunters and career changers treat their job search like obsessive
online shopping: they’ll spend hours and hours looking at postings but never
follow through on applying for anything. … AKA - Job Hunter Vortex
ALL SEARCH - NO ACTION
MY TIP:
You can’t (and shouldn’t) apply to every job that you might potentially be qualified
for that you come across. But, if you never apply, something’s wrong. You might
be paralysed by redundancy stress, job hunter anxiety or indecision or simple job
hunter fatigue.
•Try setting a goal with helpful tools like Huntr (A Kanban Board for Job
Searches) or simple tools like

Job Search Excel Spreadsheets that motivate you to
apply to a set number of openings each week (perhaps two to five). This ensures
that you’re not just wasting time searching without any follow-through.

5. APPLYING FOR JOBS YOU DON’T ACTUALLY WANT
Only applying for jobs where you’re vastly over- or underqualified is a total waste of everyone’s time. This is a serious pet peeve of hiring professionals and recruiters.
If it’s a mistake to be too selective and only apply to openings that look like perfect fits, then the reverse is also true: Applying indiscriminately to too many opportunities in the hope
that something might work out is also a poor strategy.
MY TIP:
• Hope & fear are the enemies of Job Hunters. If you don’t feel confident and positive at all after sending out an application, it might be a sign that this job isn’t for you, and was
a waste of time applying for.
• Set up a Job Search Strategy that outlines what types of jobs you will apply for and which jobs you know will be a waste of time. Basically, create some guidelines for yourself
that you can refer back to when you’re unsure or feel your slipping into a scattergun approach.
If you need help with that, hire a Job Search Coach.

6. It takes time & effort to talk to people, whether it’s having a phone chat with a recruiter,
catching up with friends, co–workers or former managers, attending a job fair, or going to a
networking event.
If you find yourself with 500+ LinkedIn connections or a bunch of verbal promises but
nothing to show for it, it’s likely a sign you’re doing the networking but what you are doing is
not paying off.
PROCRASTINATION AKA STANDING STILL
MY TIP:
• When someone says they have an idea for someone you should speak with, always follow
up to get that introduction.
• Don’t hesitate to take the initiative and check in with someone who offered you a
referral. Since this is your job search, it’s on you to take action, not on the other person.

7. When you’re networking, the best use of your time is typically by starting with your
existing network – the people who already know you, like you, and want to support
you. But, 500+ dormant LinkedIn connections are not really what networking is all
about.
500+ DORMANT LINKEDIN CONNECTIONS
IS NOT NETWORKING
MY TIP:
If your LinkedIn connection grabbing is not leading to the results you want, change
your approach and expand your focus.
• Challenge yourself to go to new places and talk to new people.
I recommend MeetUp as a handy tool for diversifying professional networks, and
there are loads of similar apps and platforms like it. Opening yourself up to new
networking events can allow career magic to happen.
• Engage constructively with key connections, rather than expecting something
to happen simply because of the number of connections you’ve managed to gather.

8. Once you’ve submitted your application,
repeatedly contacting the hiring manager
for feedback is not a great idea. Similarly,
if you scored that interview, once it’s completed
and you are told to wait for the outcome, calling or
incessantly emailing hiring professionals is often not
seen as professional follow up – it is more often perceived as
stalking or annoying.
STALKING
HIRING
PROFESSIONALS
MY TIP:
The recruiters and the hiring managers require time to evaluate the candidates,
consider best fit for the opening, consider other matters and attend to their likely busy
business-as-usual tasks. Give it a reasonable amount of time before you chase the hiring
professionals for feedback.
