Powerpoint of my first evaluation question

1. In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?

2. The media product I have created conforms to the conventions of a Hip-
Hop/Rap magazine; due to its content and details. For example XXL
magazine, which is an inspiration of mine; has similar features because I
used XXL as research for the steps of creating my magazine. For my
masthead and used similar colours, such as red and white but I have also
used my own influence on it by adding a black rectangle; to create a shadow
effect and used a different size font and scale. However the name of my
masthead (ATMOSPHERE) challenges the convention of the genre I have
chosen because it has no distinctive relation to Hip-Hop/Rap, but it can
symbolise the audience; for example, the “atmosphere” of a crowd.
Whereas XXL conforms to its genre due to letters XXL being seen as explicit
and quite masculine.

3. Another reason why my media product conforms to the conventions of a
Hip-Hop/Rap magazine, is because of the models that I have used. The
costumes that I specifically chose my models to wear, conveys the
stereotype of a rapper and someone with the conventions of a gangster;
which is affiliated with the term rapper. I thoroughly thought through what I
wanted the models to wear, so that no re-shooting was needed. Also I used
XXL as an inspiration for the position that I place my models, because the
example at the bottom right shows Dr. Dre as the superior figure/mentor
and Kendrick Lamar as the inferior figure/mentee. At the left hand corner,
you can observe that I have tried to replicate the image in my own style.

4. How the stories conform to the conventions:
The stories conform to the conventions
because of the content; for example page 26
on the right shows that there is an open “mic
night” which is affiliated with rapping and
very distinctive to only one genre (Hip-
Hop/Rap). Also from my research I have
gathered that Hip-Hop/Rap magazines like
XXL, don’t require too many stories but
include other content such as posters and
pictures. Also they used the model(s) from the
front cover on their contents page; which is
what I done because it follows the
convention. Also I have changed the costume
of the model on the contents page, to show
the diversity in what the artist wear and from
my research of XXL I found that it is a
convention of a Hip-Hop/Rap magazine.
