2. INTRODUCTION
My name is Tricia Stacy I am in
Business& Society MGMT 100-02 class at
Nichols College. For my small
business interview I interviewed my
Dad, Bill Stacy, owner of Best Tile in
Plymouth and Dedham
3. DESCRIBE
He manages a standalone business because he
likes to work close with his
vendors, workers, and anyone who walks into
the store
Products consist of Ceramic &
Porcelain, Natural
Stone, Metal, Glass, Mosaics, Accent Tile
My Dad has been in the retail business for 18
years
4. BACKGROUND
He started out working at Home Depot for 12 years
and then suffered a neck injury at work when he was
doing construction. After that he tried to come back
to work and they wouldn’t take him back fearing that
he would sue the company. He loved what he was
doing and wanted to continue so he started Best Tile.
His background in the business was at Home Depot he
was dealing with people at customer service and also
doing construction there too. Home Depot are two
different types of companies because Home Depot is in
the corporate business and Best Tile is family run
business.
5. SUCCESS& CHALLENGES
The success in the business is that he has been recognized for inventory
control at Home Depot. At Best Tile the success was opening a new store and
being the only manager that runs two stores and both being top 12 in the
company. Dedham store is number 2 and Plymouth store is 12
The challenges of the business is finding new way for sales and advertising
to overcome the economic downturn is the country
The most challenging aspect of running the business is holding your people
to a high standard while keeping the moral up too
To overcome the challenges, what he does is got to the root of that
challenge and working as a team to work through it
The critical success factors for this type of business is growing your net
income by looking for new and creative ways to put your business out there
and at the same time keeping your expenses down
The fatal flaws in this type of business is not being flexible to the type of
products you can sell and the price because you have to be within reach of the
customers reach
6. THE FUTURE
My Dad does intend to stay in the
business and extend the company as far as
he can. Right now he sells and works with
wholesale business which works with
houses and small buildings. To extend the
company he wants to work with
commercial sales which works with
bigger and better buildings which include
skyscrapers and high rises.
7. UNIQUE QUESTIONS
How many vendors did you start out with?
“ I started out with a hand full of vendors and
then expanded to having hundreds. It started out
rough but with good advertising I rose to the top”
How long did it take to launch the business?
“ It takes a while to get the word out to the
people because they all have the store that they
already go to and you have to convince them to buy
off of you, once it gets started it only goes up
from there”
8. SUMMARY
The advise my dad gave to the members
of my class is to work hard, hire good
people, and be fair to the customers and
employees
My dad taught me that it takes a lot of
hard work and long hours to launch a
new business and you can’t do it alone you
need a good team behind you
