We have looked in some detail at the hazards caused by cigarettes. We have seen the deposits
made in the lungs through the smoke machine, looked at some of the chemicals found in cigarette
smoke and looked at photographs of the damage caused to lungs and mouth by smoking.
In order to gain your pass criteria for this part of the unit you need to investigate and discuss four
factors that have a negative effect on human health. From the list created in class identify four
(including smoking) factors that have a detrimental effect and create a webpage on the wiki site
(www.standback.pbwiki.com) under your user area.

In order to gain your merit criteria for each the factors you have described you need to discuss the
mechanism by which each has a negative effect. Where do these factors act? What damage do they
do? How do they cause damage?

Finally in order to gain your distinction criteria you need to examine the social factors that are
attributed to this disease. Think about the social effects of smoking for example - smoking has been
banned in pubs and public places - why? Write a letter to an agony aunt from a character affected by
these factors. What social issues might they come across? Then write a reply from the agony aunt
outlining the science of the situation and a potential solution. Add these to the bottom of your health
factor pages
