Oil Spill Response When Contained On the Rig
This training module describes how to react on oil spill when
contained on the rig.

In this module you are required to read through the following slides and
the associated procedure.
Once you have completed the theory for this module you should
continue with the theoretical exam.
You have to go through practical elements related to this procedure.
You have to pass a practical exam related to correct practice of this
procedure.

11. QHSE issues for the operation
Prolonged and repeated contact with oil can be detrimental to
health. The main hazards arise from skin contact and inhaling of
mists.
Marine and coastal life can be contaminated in a number of way,
through poison by ingestion, destruction of habitat and direct
contact with oil.
Hydrocarbons involves a higher risk for explosion. Identify any
source of ignition. Also be aware of slip hazard from oil spill or
residue left on deck.

 Correct PPE should be used to
prevent contact with oil. This
includes slicker suit, rubber gloves
and boots.
 Barrier the area off to prevent non
essential personnel entering the
area.

13. Key elements of this procedure
 Make sure you don’t come in direct contact with the oil.
 All absorbing material and contaminated PPE should be put into a clip
top drum correctly labelled as oil contaminated waste before being sent
ashore for disposal by the logistic co-ordinate.
Remember the safe use of electrical equipment with regards to keeping
the cable away from the oil.
 Any oil residue left on the deck and surrounding area should be cleaned
using rig wash and water until it does not cause a slip or fire hazard.
