Falls Prevention Awareness Day is Sept. 23
Fear of falling is a common concern for older adults. According to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), “every 15 seconds, an older adult is seen in an emergency department for a fall-related injury.” This is an alarming statistic!
In 2008, the Falls Free Advocacy Work Group sponsored a bill in the US Senate to highlight a Falls Prevention Awareness Day. This year, the club will recognize the day with complimentary basic balance screenings from 9 to 11 am Tuesday, Sept. 23. Appointments can be made at the club front desk or by calling 701-526-1055.
On its website, the NCOA provides six quick tips for avoiding falls: http://www.ncoa.org/improve-health/ falls-prevention/take-control-of-your-health.html The first tip is to find a good balance and exercise program. Touchmark Health & Fitness Club offers two great classes for balance—Posture and Balance as well as FallProof H2O. Other helpful tips include discussing your balance concerns with your health care provider and getting your vision and hearing checked annually.
What is Hydro-Pilates™?
The club is offering this class Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:15 to 11:45 am. The Hydro-Pilates class offers nonimpact strengthening and stretching movements that require precise breathing and muscle control. This class has a mind-body focus and concentrates on core muscles movement, which helps with stabilization, posture correction, muscle strength, and stress relief. New class times and dates will start Tuesday, Sept. 9
Family Swim Night!
The club will host this fun event Friday, Sept. 19 from 7 to 8:30 pm. Bring your children, grandchildren, and/or great-grandchildren for an open swim time followed by snacks and refreshments. Children must be accompanied by an adult. RSVP at the club front desk or call 701-526- 1055 by Sept. 17. Event is open to all club members for no charge.

3. CAPTURING DELIGHT{FULL} MOMENTS
Above photos: Eight residents and a team member modeled two outfits each that highlighted this summer’s fashion. Jamie, manager of dressbarn, talked about each outfit and provided helpful tips, including what to mix and match for different events. Mark Minette, Health & Fitness Club director, escorted each model.
At Touchmark, we think a lot about the aspects of wellness and aging well. As many know, there are some fundamental guidelines for healthy aging, such as don’t smoke, get regular exercise, eat healthy foods, control weight, socialize, and keep learning.
Recent research also suggests that having a “sense of purpose” in life may help us live longer. Researchers found that individuals who reported having greater purpose in life had a 15% lower risk of death than those who said they were more or less aimless. Furthermore, the benefits of having a sense of purpose apply to all ages (Hill and Turiano).
At Touchmark, we are intentionally purposeful. Each day, we endeavor to radiate Touchmark’s long-held values of teamwork, service, integrity, compassion, and excellence. These values are reflected in the Touchmark Full Life—from the homes we design and build, the programs and services we provide, and the relationships we nurture.
As I reflect on the elements of a purposeful life, I recall the poem The Dash, by Linda Ellis, which can be found on the Internet. Basically, the poem describes the dash that is etched in a tombstone between a person’s birthdate and death date. The dash represents all of one’s activities and contributions.
Let’s live “the dash” and make a difference. Take advantage of all Touchmark has to offer. A PURPOSE{FULL} life is filled with rewards—for you and others.
