12. What is
xAPI?
• Answer #1
Next-generation SCORM
• Answer #2
A protocol for recording any learning
experience to give a more rich picture of
the development path.
• Answer #3
A protocol and language for sending and
retrieving data about learning
experiences: activity statements
• Answer #4
Independence from “silo-ed” LMS,
allowing you to connect multiple learning
and business platforms
• Answer #5
“the holy grail” where we can correlate job
performance data with training data to
assess people and training effectiveness
13. What is an
LRS?
The LRS (Learning Records Store) is the
database that captures all these
transactions. It receives, stores and
serves back xAPI data.
Typically an LRS comes with a number
of data visualizations that let you
interpret and use the data you’ve sent.

15. When we
live in a
SCORM
world …
• We focus on the instruction & the
media in elearning.
• Developer tools do the heavy lifting
for SCORM.
• We don’t think much about data or
reporting.
• We may struggle to tie learning
“completions” to organization
results.
• We probably don’t track out-of-LMS
learning at depth or scale.
16. In an xAPI
world …
• We focus on the instruction & the
media & the data in everything.
• There are very few rich developer
tools do the heavy lifting for xAPI
yet.
• We now get to think about data and
reporting.
• We can tie learning & behavior to
organization results if we do it right.
• We can track out-of-LMS learning at
depth and scale.
• We can import behaviors &
organizational results tied to
learning.
… & connect to the Internet of Things.
17. Tell us… • What are you doing with
Internet of Things?
18. What is this
Internet of
Things?
“IoT is a concept that describes a
future where devices, systems and
services around the world are
interconnected across a common
network (typically the Internet) and
are able to interact in ways that
fundamentally enhance the way we
live our lives.”
US Ignite Global Cities Challenge (2014) https://us-
ignite.org/globalcityteams/faq/
21. About that
Internet of
Things…
“Connectivity and devices are just
enablers. The real value for users is
created by making sense of the data
that those devices generate. Sensors
generate data, data produces
knowledge, knowledge drives action.”
Schuermans & Vakulenko (2014)

34. Reporting
out:
ADL’s Design
Cohort
Learning
Experience
• Sponsored by the ADL
• Some 15 teams
• Worked along side each other for 13
weeks
• Each team worked on a project of
their choosing in which they
experimented and implemented
some aspect of the xAPI
• Weekly meetings across all teams to
share ideas, lessons learned, guest
presentations, etc.
• Fabulous way to learn by doing.
• This is where Meg and Patrick met.
48. Reading
data from
the LRS is
essential
• Use callbacks: checklist items are
only marked complete visually when
the LRS says so
• Allows us to act upon the recording
of individual xAPI statements as they
occur
• This reading of the LRS is what
enabled the connection between the
learning and the IoT – this is how we
found out what was going on outside
the learning environment.
49. Sourcing our
verbs
• Smart: Grammar counts
• Hard: There is no one source of all
verbs
• Then: Make up your own
50. What is
complete?
• Completion!?!?!
• Checklist sends “Complete” to LRS
once all items are checked off
• We built a “Complete All” button
• Checklist determines completion vs.
LRS/LMS determining completion
51. What comes
next?
• What questions do you have?
• What ideas does this spark for your
own learning projects?
52. Join the xAPI Learning Cohorts
starting February 2016!
