On behalf of Step By Step we hope your school can join our efforts in helping almost 2,000 Ontarians that
need organ & tissue donations by participating in any or all the following;
•Arrange to have students carry the Torch of Life from City/Town Hall to your school
•Arrange to select students to represent your school by speaking with media etc..These kids are called
Student Torch Champions
•Arrange to have a student assembly at your school. We can help with agenda if needed.
•Arrange some students/staff to film the entire event. Creating a short film afterwards to be used as an
awareness tool. Best film gets a prize to be announced.
•Arrange to have your students create an organ donation chant, jingle during the student assembly and
during the carrying of the Torch. Best chant gets a prize to be announced
•Help our road team of 4 with accommodations & meals if possible
•Create ideas & ongoing projects so your school can continue to inspire your community to register people
as organ & tissue donors

Our goal is to register over a million Ontarians in the newly created Organ & Tissue Registry and the Bone
Marrow Registry.
For the past 10 years, the Torch Of Life has been carried by students for organ & tissue donations,
throughout Canada and the world. We strongly believe the students of Ontario will inspire the entire
Province by representing the famous Torch of Life. Their genuine enthusiasm will infect their community
and together infect all Ontarians. One day our efforts together can proudly proclaim, that Ontario leads the
world in organ & tissue donations. Just think how much happiness could be brought to so many people.

June 13 2000 -The Torch Of Life Appears
The Torch Of Life mysteriously arrives at Step By Step’s doorstep of their office at 170 Lauder Ave in Toronto.
June 20 2000 – 2002 Canada 769 Day Walk
George Marcello, began a 12,000 km walk across Canada, thanking his anonymous donor family, carrying this beautiful Torch.
On September 5, 2001, George was invited to bring the Torch to Vatican City, where Pope John Paul ll blessed it. The Pope
proclaimed that Organ & Tissue donations was a genuine act of love and wisely encouraged the kids to carry the Torch. He said
the youth would inspire the World. Afterwards thousands turned to millions of Torch Bearers and the legacy grew.
January 2004 – Kristopher’s Wish
George passed the Torch to 13 year old Kristopher Knowles in his hometown of Sarnia. Kris was in need of a liver transplant
and carried the Torch across Canada. Like a modern day pied piper, Kris recruited hundreds of thousands of kids as he talked to
them about his wish, to help save over 4,000 people waiting for organs and not worrying about his own life.
October 1 2007-2008 SOS4000 Canada Student Torch Relay
Kristopher passed the Torch to his army of students, who relayed the Torch throughout Canada these amazing kids set an
example for other countries to follow.
October 23 2009-2010 SOSTHEAMERICAS USA / Canada Student Torch Relay
This time the Torch began in Alaska and went through Canada, entering the USA via Maine. The Torch went through 13 States
before finishing in Washington DC at the Pope John Paul ll Cultural Center on April 14 2010.
October 31 2011 – Donor Dads in memory of Nicholas & Ahmed sparks Ontario Tour
2 famous Donor Dads, were brought to Toronto, to carry the Torch in memory of their sons Nicholas & Ahmed. In 1994, Reg
Green lost his 7 year old son while vacationing in Italy, due to a botched robbery . He donated Nicholas’s organs to 7 Italian
kids. Ismael Khatib lost his 11 year old boy In Jenin Palestine, due to mistaken shot by an Israeli Soldier. He donated Ahmed’s
organs to 5 Israeli kids. Ahmed’s brother Khaled will join Kristopher Knowles throughout the entire 110 day Ontario Tour. They
will urge The students of Ontario to lead way to inspire the public to register as organ donors. Hopefully one day nobody
needs to die waiting for an organ/tissue transplant.


Online Organ and Tissue Donor Registration

Your decision to register now could one day save up to eight lives
and enhance as many as 75 more.
If you are 16 years of age or older and have a valid Ontario Health
Number, you can register your consent online to become an organ
and tissue donor. By registering your consent, information about
your donation decision will be available and accessible should it
ever be required.
When you register your consent to donate organs and tissue, your
donation decision is recorded in a Ministry of Health and Long-Term
Care database. In the event of your death or imminent death, when
all life-saving efforts have failed, your donation decision will be
disclosed for the purpose of sharing this information with your
family so that they can honour your wishes.
You need to register even if you signed a donor card. A signed
donor card is not recorded in the Ministry of Health and Long-Term
Care’s database and may not be available when needed. Organ and
tissue donor registration is the only secure and guaranteed way to
make your decision to save lives known.

• One person can save up to 8 lives. 2 lungs, 2 kidneys, heart, liver,
pancreas. & small intestines and restore over 85 lives with tissues
• There is no age barrier regarding the donor
• All major religions support organ and tissue donations
• A live donor can save others with liver, lung, kidney, bone marrow &
few cases of pancreas & intestines
• A cadaveric liver can be split in two to save two people
• Cadaveric organs & tissues can be retrieved from both Brain Dead and
Heart Dead donors
• Success rates climb over 90% for living organ recipients to enjoy
productive lives
• Transplant team determines whether your organs and tissues are
suited for recipients
• It is encouraged to discuss your donation wishes with your family and
indicate these wishes on a donor card or through registration. Check
with your Provincial/ State Organ Agency
• It is important to donate blood, without blood there is no transplants

Since the inception of Step By Step in 1996, the founder & the inspiration, George Marcello has literally
devoted every minute of his life trying to help people that are in desperate need of organ & tissue
donations. As it has been said, he didn’t know how to sing or dance, and after receiving his life saving
liver transplant in 1995, he wanted to thank his anonymous donor by walking across Canada. As a result
of 7 more campaigns & 50 million steps later, George has guided Step By Step to receive international

worldwide. The famous Torch Of Life has become our cherished symbol and the kids that carry it have

people have all echoed that our children can change the world. In our latest campaign, Register Now Ontario
Student Torch Relay, we are determined to reach an ambitious goal; register over a million Ontarians.
Many times over the years, George has set his sights high. When he said he was going to convince
Premier Harris to allocate over million dollars, he did it. When he said he was going to walk across
Canada and meet the Pope, he did it. When he said, he was going to bring a 13 year old boy who
needed a liver transplant across Canada, he did it. When he said he was going to organize thousands
of kids to relay the Torch from Canada To USA he did it. When he said he was going to bring 2 of
the world’s most famous organ dads to Toronto, he did it. So now he says that Step By Step’s
army of kids in Ontario will inspire the Province to register over a million people, they will do it. He
always worked with barely no budget, and completed things. Lets make it a little more comfortable
for him this time around. Join us by contributing at the beginning. We all know George deserves it.
