10. Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru

The rst and the longest time serving prime Minister of India. He was a secular and socialist leader of
India. Pt. Nehru was son of Mr. Motilal Nehru and Swarooprani. His father was a famous lawyer. Pt.
Nehru was born at Anand Bhawan in Allahabad. For the freedom of India, he participated in
movements and went to jail several times. Pt. Nehru was a man of letters and wrote a famous book
‘Discover of India’. His innovative ideas appears in ‘Planning Commission of India’. Children were loved
by him very much and each year 14th of November is celebrated as ‘Bal Diwas’ in India. He was died in
1964.
9.Manmohan Singh
The great economist and thinker served as prime minister of India from 2004 to 2014. He was only the
prime minister who was reelected for second term after successfully completing rst term. He held
several key posts like Chief Economic Advisor, Reserve Bank Governor and Head of Planning
Commission. Former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao appointed him as Finance Minister in his
government. He liberalized Indian Economy and gave Indian Economy new wings. He started several
projects like Rural Health Mission, Unique Identi cation Authority and RTI Act, civil nuclear agreement
with US. There were some corruption charges also like Commonwealth Games, 2G-spectrum allocation
and coal block allocations.
8.V. Narasimha Rao
Demolition of Babri Mosque and open economy policy were the two important incident when he was
prime minister of India. Man Mohan Singh proposed open economy to boost up FDI in ows in 1991.
Important decisions were taken by Rao to strengthen the internal security of the country. Instead of
holding a combined government of several political parties, he passed important laws. He also
introduced computer based trading system of the National Stock Exchange in 1994.
7.Indira Gandhi
She was the only child of Jawaharlal Nehru. She was married to Feroz Gandhi. The credit for initiating
the Green Revolution in India goes to her. People of world surprised with her bold decisions and rm
conviction. Indira gained a lot of in uence in the Congress Party and the sentiments of the public. She
was known to be ruthless during her term as Prime Minister that uplifted India out of a policy quagmire
and rmly placed the development of the country on the fast track. A lot of controversy raised when
she imposed emergency. Aftermath of Operation Blue Star a subsequent assassination took place. She
was died and riots arose in India. A large scale destruction of people and wealth took place in India. Her
name will be written in annals of History as the greatest prime minister of India.
6.Morarji Desai
India’s rst non-Congress Prime Minister and was the architect of India’s nuclear program. He was
made prime minister after the nationwide movement of Jai Prakash Narayan. He was a true follower
of Gandhi’s non-violence path. He was only politician who received Pakistan’s highest civilian award
Nishan-e-Pakistan from Pakistan President Ghulam Ishaq Khan. His tasks are remembered till now
especially in social, health and administrative reforms in the country.
5.Rajiv Gandhi
After assassination of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi became the prime minister of India in 1984. He was
the youngest prime minister of India at the age of 40 years. He was the scion of reputed Nehru-Gandhi
family. He was married to Sonia having two children Rahul and Priyanka. Before joining the politics, he
was a professional pilot for the state-owned Indian Airlines. After the death of Sanjay Gandhi in an aero
plane crash in 1980, Rajiv joined politics unwillingly. A nationwide sympathy gave him huge majority 411
out of 542 in general elections after assassination of Indira Gandhi. There were two large controversial
incidents Bhopal disaster and Shah Bano case took place. Bofors scandal damaged his corruption-free
image and resulted in huge defeat in 1989 general elections. He was brutally murdered by LTTE.
4.Chaudhary Charan Singh
Charan Singh was born in a Jat family in village Bhadola of Ghaziabad district. He opposed Jawaharlal’s
socialistic policies. Soon he became an unquestionable leader of peasants of north India. He became
the rst non-congress chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. Charan Singh left Congress party in 1967, and
formed his own political party Bharatiya Kranti Dal. With help of Raj Narain and Ram Manohar Lohia he
became chief minister of UP in 1967 and later in 1970. He served as prime minister of India from July
1979 to Jan 1980. He became deputy prime minister and home minister in Morarji Desai government.
3.Atal Behari Vajpayee
One of the most respected political leaders of India. The recipient of the Padma Vibhushan in 1992 and
Bharat Ratna in 2016. He successfully launched nuclear test on 11th and 13th of May 1998. He was a
great scholar, thinker, poet and straight forward leader. His Lahore Bus Service to break the ice
between India and Pakistan was praised by almost all the nations of the world. Kargil war was fought
between India and Pakistan and due to his best political vision India got victory. After massive defeat in
2004 general elections he kept distance from politics forever.
2.Narendra Modi
India’s current prime minister is a worldwide popular leader. BJP got a huge victory in 2014 general
elections. He has successfully completed years without a single corruption charge.
1.Lal Bahadur Shastri
He was the second prime minister of India. After the death of Pt. Nehru, he hold the job well and
showed his hard labor and skill. He is remembered as an honest prime minister of India. He gave the
slogan ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’ during war between India and Pakistan. Decisive victory over Pakistan in
1965 raised head of India after a shameful defeat with China. On second October his birthday is
celebrated along with Gandhi ji. He worked effortlessly for farmer sector in India in continuation of
Nehru’s socialist policies.
