 Is iron good for you?
 How is iron used in medicine?
Iron is the most common element in the earth’s
crust. It’s atomic number is twenty six and is a lonely
atom. Iron’s symbol is FE which comes from the Latin
word ferrum. Iron’s atomic number is 26 and it’s
atomic mass is 55.845.Iron is lonely, it wants 6 more
electrons for its shell to be full.
Iron is mainly found underground. It’s found as
an ore in mines. Iron also can be found inside
meteorites and inside rocks. Our earths core and
many other planets core are made of iron. Did you
know that on mars, many rocks have iron in it so
they oxidizes and becomes a brick red which gives
mars it’s red color.

                       An iron mine in America.
Iron was discovered in 5000 BC. No one really
knows who first discovered iron but, we do know
that it was used a very long time ago by the
evidence scientists have found. An example of
evidence would be weapons. The most common
weapon is swords. Swords are common because
there were lots of wars back then. During the Civil
War, people created cannons made of iron.
Iron has many physical properties to it. Iron’s
melting point is 2,800° F and it’s boiling point is
5,184° F. Iron surprisingly dissolves in water but it
takes a very long time for the process to be
complete. Iron is a solid at room temperature but
can be a liquid and a gas. It has no smell and it is
cold when under ground.
            Iron being turned
            molten iron.
Just because iron is a mineral, there is chemical
properties too it. If you add carbon to iron, the iron
will no longer be iron, it becomes steel. Steel is a
stronger form then ordinary iron. The more carbon
you add to the iron the stronger it is. But if you add
too much carbon, the steel is a brittle that we call pig
iron. They call it pig iron because when we first made
it, it was like piglets sucking on their mothers udder.
Another combination will use water and oxygen. If
you mix one of these with iron it will create iron
oxidewhich is basically rust.

Iron is in fact really good for your body. Iron makes
you very strong, that’s why your parents always tell
you to eat your fruits, veggies and meats. Every
living thing on earth( and maybe on other planets )
have iron in them, except for crabs, they mostly
have copper. If you don’t have enough iron, you
get iron deficiency. Iron deficiency is when your
body doesn’t have enough iron in it. Your
symptoms could be being tired more often then
usual or being very weak. You can cure it buy
eating fruits, veggies, and meat.
 Iron is used in medicine to cure fatigue and
iron deficiency. The way they put iron in the
medicine is they grind the iron until it’s a
powder form. They add only grams of iron
because it’s not good to have to much of it so it
doesn’t effect the other chemicals in the
medicine. When you add a small amount of
iron, the medicine is used to prevent iron
deficiency. But when you add lots of iron it is
    used to treat iron deficiency.
A picture of iron used in medicine. You mainly
find it as a fluid as shown here.
 The experiment I’m about to do is extracting
    pure iron from cereal.
 Materials:
 A magnet
 Two plastic bags
 Cereal (works best with cereal with 100% iron
    in it. Check nutrition's bar)
 A cup of warm or hot water
 I learned through my project that iron is a very
interesting and unique element. When I first
knew about iron I thought iron was just a
strong metal but it turns out I spoke too soon.
