nylon-6,6 has a higher melting temperaturethan nylon-6,10. why
Solution
Both Nylon-6,6 and Nylon-6,10 are polyamides. Nylon-6,6 has 12 carbon atoms totally in its polymeric structure, 6 from hexamethylene diamine and six from adipic acid i.e. equal from both monomers. Nylon-6,10 has 16 carbon atoms in its polymeric structure, 10 from Sebacic acid and 6 from hexamethylene diamine.
This means Nylon-6,6 has lesser carbon atoms than Nylon-6,10. This directly concludes that the difference between amide groups in case of Nylon-6,6 is lesser than in the case of Nylon-6,10.
Lesser is the difference between amide groups, more is the intermolecular interaction. More intermolecular attraction means higher attractive forces and higher is the melting point in case of Nylon-6,6.
